Limnophora Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830: 517 View in CoL . Type-species: Limnophora palustris Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 View in CoL [= Anthomyia maculosa Meigen, 1826 ], des. Coquillett (1910: 561).
Diagnosis. Eye usually bare; prestomal teeth developed; prealar seta absent; lower proepimeral seta upcurved; prosternum with lateral setulae; postsutural dorsocentral setae 3 or 4; vein M slightly curved forwards just before apex; wing with setulae at the base of vein R 4+5 on dorsal and ventral surfaces; sternite 1 bare; female ovipositor with segment 8 directed upwards and with small spicules; hypoproct elongated and with spinules.
Comments. Two species have been recorded from Vanuatu, L. efatensis Shinonaga and L. mesolissa Bezzi , the former being endemic and recently described by Shinonaga (2005) who added 87 species to the 32 previously known to occur in the Australasian and Oceanian Regions.
