Diagnosis. Frons and face white pruinose ( Fig. 32C–D View FIGURE 32 ); mystacal macrosetae and setae whitish ( Fig. 32C–D View FIGURE 32 ); 3 postalar and 4 marginal scutellar macrosetae ( Fig. 32G View FIGURE 32 ); legs mostly black, except basal extremity of tibiae reddish yellow and hind femur yellow on basal fourth ( Fig. 32B View FIGURE 32 ).

Description. Holotype male ( Figs 32A–E, G–H View FIGURE 32 , 33 View FIGURE 33 ). Head ( Fig. 32C–D View FIGURE 32 ): black, white pruinose ( Fig. 32C–D View FIGURE 32 ), except vertex and occiput yellowish dorsally; orbital setae yellowish, apruinose stripe between base of antennae and ocellar tubercle; mystacal macrosetae and setae whitish ( Fig. 32C–D View FIGURE 32 ); ocelli ochre-yellow, 2 yellow ocellar setae; 10 yellowish postocular macrosetae becoming whitish laterally; occipital and lower occipital setae white; proboscis shining black, proboscial setae whitish and labial yellowish; palpus black, yellowish white setose, yellow distally ( Fig. 32C–D View FIGURE 32 ). Antenna: black, except pedicel extremities and postpedicel basal extremity light brown; black setose, except scape ventrally whitish setose with a few yellowish setae; scape sparsely white pruinose; postpedicel with sensorial element reddish brown; sensorial area light brown ( Fig. 32E View FIGURE 32 ).

Thorax ( Fig. 32A–B, G View FIGURE 32 ): black, scutum with metallic bluish reflections; pleura white pruinose; postalar callus reddish yellow ( Fig. 32G View FIGURE 32 ). Chaetotaxy: mostly white setose, except punctations golden, katatergite and anatergite whitish; macrosetae: 2 notopleural (1 black), 1 supra-alar, 3 postalar, 4 marginal scutellar (plus 4 yellow setae) ( Fig. 32G View FIGURE 32 ) and 3 posterior anepisternal yellow.

Wings ( Fig. 32H View FIGURE 32 ): translucent; brown microtrichia on apical 2/3; veins brown; cell r 5 open; halteres pale yellow.

Legs ( Fig. 32B View FIGURE 32 ): mostly black except fore and mid trochanters brown; fore and mid femora dark brown, yellowish at basal extremity; hind femur yellow on basal fourth; knees reddish brown; fore and mid tibia reddish yellow basally, becoming dark brown towards apex; hind tibia yellow on basal half and dark brown on distal half; coxae white pruinose. Chaetotaxy: coxae, fore and mid trochanters white setose, hind trochanter with white setae and yellowish macrosetae; femora yellowish white setose; fore femur with 1 anterior distal and 2 dorsal distal black and 3 posterodorsal (2 basal yellow and 1 distal black) macrosetae; mid femur with 2 anterior yellow, 2 posterodorsal distal black and 1 posterodorsal basal yellow macrosetae; hind femur with 1 anterior black, 1 anterodorsal yellow and 3 dorsal distal black macrosetae; tibiae with black dorsal, reddish anteroventral and yellowish white posteroventral macrosetae and setae, fore and mid tibiae with reddish macrosetae distally; tarsi with dorsal black and ventral reddish macrosetae and setae; brush setae reddish; claws black; empodium reddish yellow; pulvilli ochre-yellow.

Abdomen ( Fig. 32A–B View FIGURE 32 ): black with metallic bluish reflection, punctate with brown setae mid-dorsally, whitish to golden anteriorly and posteriorly and white laterally; T1 with 3–4, T2 with 2, T3–5 with 1 and T6 with 4–5 yellowish lateral marginal macrosetae; T7 brown setose; sternites dark brown with a light brown band posteriorly, sparsely whitish pruinose and setose.

Length. Body: 13.1 mm; wings: 10.7 mm.

Holotype condition. Left notopleural macrosetae missing; terminalia dissected.

Female ( Figs 32F View FIGURE 32 , 34 View FIGURE 34 ). Similar to male, except postpedicel sensorial area smaller ( Fig. 32F View FIGURE 32 ) and terminalia dark brown, yellowish setose; T 9+ T 10+cercus truncate posteriorly, indented medially with a recess mid-laterally, sparsely setose dorsally and posteriorly ( Fig. 34A View FIGURE 34 ); hypoproct conic ( Fig. 34B View FIGURE 34 ); S8 concave mid-anteriorly, mid-posterior margin truncate, sparsely setose laterally ( Fig. 34C View FIGURE 34 ); spermathecae with 8–9 turns; spermathecae and sperm pump very sclerotized; sperm pump less differentiated; genital fork with thick edges; accessory gland rounded ( Fig. 34D View FIGURE 34 ).

Variation. Fore and mid tibiae reddish yellow on its entire extension in some specimens.

Etymology. From Latin: saltuarius = pertaining to forests, forester, ranger. It refers to the occurrence of this species in the Amazonian rainforest, thus pertaining to the forest.

Distribution. Brazil (Amazonas) ( Fig. 41 View FIGURE 41 ).

Phenology. The largest number of collecting events for this species occurred between July and January with a pic in September (Tab. 1), which coincides with the dry season, July to November, in the Amazonian rain forest.

Taxonomic discussion. Aphestia saltuaria sp. nov. can be separated from other Aphestia species by the fore and mid femora completely black ( Fig. 32B View FIGURE 32 ); cercus trapezoidal ( Figs 33E View FIGURE 33 , 34A View FIGURE 34 ); and posterior margin of gonocoxite truncate ( Fig. 33G–H View FIGURE 33 ).
