Diagnosis. Frons white and face brownish white pruinose ( Fig. 29C View FIGURE 29 ); mystacal macrosetae and setae black ( Fig. 29C–D View FIGURE 29 ); 2 postalar and 4 marginal scutellar macrosetae ( Fig. 29G View FIGURE 29 ); legs mostly black, except fore tibia reddish brown, yellow on basal third and hind tibia yellow, dark brown on apical third ( Fig. 29B View FIGURE 29 ); cercus with small tooth at posterolateral margin ( Figs 30A, E View FIGURE 30 31A View FIGURE 31 ).

Description. Holotype male ( Figs 29A–E, G–H View FIGURE 29 , 30 View FIGURE 30 ). Head ( Fig. 29C–D View FIGURE 29 ): black, white pruinose ( Fig. 29C View FIGURE 29 ), except face and dorsal half of facial gibbosity brownish white and vertex slightly brownish; orbital setae yellowish white; small apruinose triangle dorsally to antennal socket; facial setae bellow antennae brown; mystacal macrosetae and setae black ( Fig. 29C–D View FIGURE 29 ); ocellar tubercle apruinose dorsally, ocelli yellow, 2 black ocellar setae; vertex light brown setose; 10–11 yellow-pale postocular macrosetae; occipital and lower occipital setae white; proboscis black, light brown basally, proboscial setae white and labial yellow; palpus black with black setae ( Fig. 29C–D View FIGURE 29 ). Antenna: black, except pedicel and postpedicel at basal extremity dark brown; black setose; postpedicel sensorial element reddish brown, sensorial area brown, occupying almost all postpedicel length ( Fig. 29E View FIGURE 29 ).

Thorax ( Fig. 29A–B, G View FIGURE 29 ): black, scutum with metallic bluish reflections; pleura white pruinose; apex of postpronotal lobe reddish brown; postalar callus dark brown ( Fig. 29G View FIGURE 29 ). Chaetotaxy: mostly white setose, punctations golden and scutum laterally with few black setae; katatergite and anatergite white setose; macrosetae: antepronotal white, 2 notopleural black, 1 supra-alar, 2 postalar ( Fig. 29G View FIGURE 29 ), 4 marginal scutellar ( Fig. 29G View FIGURE 29 ) and 2 posterior anepisternal pale yellow.

Wings ( Fig. 29H View FIGURE 29 ): translucent; cells on distal half of wing with brown microtrichia; veins brown; cell r 5 open; halteres pale yellow.

Legs ( Fig. 29B View FIGURE 29 ): mostly black except, fore and mid femora with basal and distal extremities dark brown; hind femur with yellow basal third; fore tibia reddish brown, yellow on basal third; mid tibia dark brown, reddish brown on basal third; hind tibia yellow, dark brown on apical third; tarsi with first tarsomeres dark brown; coxae white pruinose. Chaetotaxy: fore and mid coxae white setose on basal half and black on distal half; hind coxa whitish setose; fore and mid trochanters brown setose; hind trochanter whitish setose; femora black setose dorsally, white ventrally on fore and mid femora; fore femur with 1 anterodorsal yellow and 1 dorsal (2 distal) black macrosetae; mid femur with 2 anterior and 1 dorsal distal black macrosetae; hind femur with 1 anterior and 4 dorsal (1 distal) black macrosetae; tibiae with black dorsal and yellowish ventral macrosetae (reddish distally on mid and hind tibiae), ventrally white setose; tarsi with black dorsal and reddish brown ventral macrosetae and setae, brush setae reddish; claws black; empodium and pulvilli ochre-yellow.

Abdomen ( Fig. 29A–B View FIGURE 29 ): black, punctate with brown and white setae, golden anteriorly and white laterally; T1 with 4, T2–5 with 1 and T6 with 4 yellow marginal lateral macrosetae; T7 brown setose; sternites light brown with a dark brown band posteriorly; sternites white pruinose and sparsely white setose.

Terminalia ( Fig. 30 View FIGURE 30 ): reddish brown, except gonocoxite black; black setose, except cercus and subepandrial sclerite golden and gonocoxite brown setose; oval in dorsal and ventral views ( Fig. 30A–B View FIGURE 30 ); epandrium slightly concave posteriorly, dorsolaterally setose ( Fig. 30A, E View FIGURE 30 ); cercus rectangular with small tooth posterolaterally, sparsely setose dorsally, denser on tooth ( Fig. 30A, E View FIGURE 30 ); subepandrial sclerite lanceolate, sparsely setose dorsally ( Fig. 30A, E View FIGURE 30 ); gonocoxite with basal half rectangular and conic posterodorsally, densely setose ( Fig. 30C, G–H View FIGURE 30 ); gonostylus obtuse, apically setose ( Fig. 30C, G–H View FIGURE 30 ); hypandrium cordiform ( Fig. 30F View FIGURE 30 ); phallus with short prongs, tapering towards apex ( Fig. 30I–K View FIGURE 30 ); parameral sheath conic posteriorly ( Fig. 30I View FIGURE 30 ); parameral apodeme directed ventrally and anteriorly ( Fig. 30I–K View FIGURE 30 ); ejaculatory apodeme fan-shaped, weakly sclerotized ( Fig. 30J View FIGURE 30 ).

Length. Body: 11.3 mm; wings: 9.5 mm.

Holotype condition. Scape with ventral macrosetae missing; wings slightly creased marginally; terminalia dissected.

Female ( Figs 29F View FIGURE 29 , 31 View FIGURE 31 ). Similar to male, except postpedicel with sensorial area smaller ( Fig. 29F View FIGURE 29 ) and terminalia light brown with brown setae and some white setae; T 9+ T 10+cercus with small tooth posterolaterally, posteriorly slightly concave and slightly indented medially, dorsally, laterally and posteriorly setose ( Fig. 31A View FIGURE 31 ); hypoproct cuneiform ( Fig. 31B View FIGURE 31 ); S8 V-shaped, indented mid-anteriorly, sparsely setose dorsally and laterally ( Fig. 31C View FIGURE 31 ); spermathecae with 4 turns, more sclerotized than spermathecal ducts; sperm pump less distinct; genital fork with thick edges; accessory gland bacilliform ( Fig. 31D View FIGURE 31 ).

Variation. Some specimens with reddish brown setae on dorsal half of face; two black distal macrosetae on hind femur; six yellowish marginal macrosetae on T6; small yellowish setae by the side of marginal scutellar macrosetae; supra-alar macrosetae and marginal scutellar macrosetae black; yellow part of the legs of some specimens with green reflections.

Etymology. From Latin: nigriseta = nigri: black and seta: seta. Referring to the mystacal macrosetae of this species that are completely black.

Distribution. Costa Rica (Puntarenas) and Panama (Colón) ( Fig. 40 View FIGURE 40 ).

Phenology. The largest number of collecting events for this species occurred from February to June with a pic in May (Tab. 1), which coincides with spring and early summer in the northern hemisphere.

Taxonomic discussion. Aphestia nigriseta sp. nov. can be separated from other species by the presence of black macrosetae and setae on the entire facial extension ( Fig. 29C–D View FIGURE 29 ); face brownish pruinose ( Fig. 29C View FIGURE 29 ); two postalar macrosetae ( Fig. 29G View FIGURE 29 ); femora black in almost its entire extension; and hind tibia with basal 2/3 yellow ( Fig. 29B View FIGURE 29 ).
