Type species. Amblyseius (Scapulaseius) stilus Karg & Oomen-Kalsbeek, 1987: 134 .
Main distinguishing characteristics. Dorsal shield usually without pronounced constriction next to R1 (with pronounced constriction in the only species reported from Brazil, S. linharis (El-Banhawy)) View in CoL ; usually with anterolateral striation, in some species with patches of light reticulation, but smooth in the central part of the shield (totally smooth in S. linharis View in CoL ). Idiosomal setal pattern 10A:9B/JV-3:ZV; dorsal shield setae of similar lengths (except Z5 and less often Z4), often shorter than distance to closest setae; r3 and/ or R1 occasionally on dorsal shield. Sternal shield with posterior margin usually straight or slightly concave; in a few species, with a median projection or undulate. Ventrianal shield varying from pentagonal to vase-shaped. Spermathecal calyx cup- to trumpet-shaped. Fixed and movable cheliceral digits with 6–16 and 1–3 teeth, respectively. Macrosetae varying from sharp-tipped to capitate, always present on legs II–IV and, in some species, also on leg I. Male ventrianal shield with three pairs of pre-anal setae arranged in a triangular pattern; spermadactyl of the type heel-and-toe, L- or wand-shaped.
Remarks. Only one of the 63 species presently included in this genus has been reported from Brazil. Worldwide, species of this genus have been reported from plants.
