Type. Lampyris striata F. Not located. Early records of this species were from Pacific islands.

Colophotia striata (F.). Germar 1848: 184.

Luciola striata View in CoL (F.). Lacordaire 1857: 338. Olivier 1902: 86. Lea 1909: 46 106. McDermott 1966: 113. Fu et al. 2012a: 3. Ballantyne & Lambkin 2013: 11, fig. 5 blue number 24. Ballantyne et al. (2016) fig. 1b.

Luciola neglecta Olivier 1883: 77 . McDermott 1966: 113. Synonymy.

Type. Luciola neglecta Olivier. Not located.

Material examined (in addition to Ballantyne & Lambkin 2013). INDONESIA. Java. 2 males, 2 females (Prague) ; Sumatra. (det. E. Olivier) 3 males ( IRNSB) .

Diagnosis. 8.0–9.0 mm long; very distinctive dorsal colouration; pronotum dingy pale brownish with a wide dark brown median marking reaching both anterior and posterior margins; MS and MN very dark almost black; elytra pale brownish with dark brown lateral margin, and very dark markings at base along the margins of the MS; elytra with pale suture and three pale interstitial lines defined at their sides by punctures; three faint pale lines not defined by punctures occurring between suture and interstitial lines; at least three well defined interstitial lines present; aedeagal sheath with anterior half of sternite considerably prolonged and acute; the only Atyphella where aedeagal ML has paired, wide, apically pointed lateral teeth at basal fourth; LL strongly divergent in basal third, then slightly divergent towards apex. The only Atyphella species known from Java and Sumatra. One of eight Atyphella with striped elytra ( Table 10), of which six are exclusively Australian; distinguished from the other two ( Aty. lamingtonia Ballantyne and Aty. testaceolineata Pic ) by the broad dark markings on the pronotum, and the dark elytral markings adjacent to the MS (which are absent in Aty. lamingtonia and Aty. testaceolineata ).

Discussion. Interpretation of certain features of this species was reassessed in Ballantyne et al. (2016) and their analysis based on these modifications indicated the placement of this species in Atyphella . Although no types were located the species was identified by its very distinctive dorsal colour pattern and occurrence in Java.

Certain features appear inconsistent with the placement in the genus Atyphella : the pronotum is not wider than the elytral humeral width, the basal dorsal portion of the aedeagal LL approaches Pygoluciola , the anterior portion of the aedeagal sheath sternite is very narrow (it is usually broad in Atyphella ) and the posterior area of the sheath sternite is narrow, membranous and appears to be emarginated along its right side. We suggest this species be reinvestigated from freshly collected material when possible.
