Pygoluciola phupan Ballantyne View in CoL sp. nov.

Figs 437−448 View FIGURES 437−448

Types. Holotype and paratype male. LAOS NE. 20.12N 104.01E Hua Phan Province Ban Saleui, Phu Pan (Mt.) 1300–1900 m, 27.iv.–1.vi.2011 C. Holzchuh ( NHML) GoogleMaps .

Diagnosis. 12.0 mm long; light brown dorsally with pinkish fat body visible beneath pronotum; most obviously distinguished from other Pygoluciola by the posterior margin of T8 which is narrowly downturned but does not engulf V7 apex; otherwise similar to Py. qingyu where neither V7 nor T8 are noticeably prolonged.

Male. 12.0 mm long. Colour ( Figs 437−444 View FIGURES 437−448 ): dorsally light brown with white elytral apices (accumulation of fat body) and suture pale in apical 2/3; viewed from beneath elytral apex is narrowly darker brown; pronotum semitransparent with pink fat body visible beneath cuticle in a rectangular shape which is wider than long; venter of thorax, all tibiae and tarsi, and basal abdominal ventrites very dark almost black; remainder of legs pale brown; LO in V6, 7 creamy white; LO in V7 retracted from lateral margins and extending into base of MPP (Fig. shows specimen after soaking in soapy water when and LO material has apparently retracted from the dorsal surface of V7); all abdominal tergites except T8 very dark almost black; T8 orange yellow ( Figs 439, 440, 443, 444 View FIGURES 437−448 ). Pronotum: lateral margins slightly convex sided (B> A, C); posterolateral corners acute projecting as far as posterior median margin; width less than humeral width. Elytron: very slightly convex sided; no interstitial lines; punctures conspicuous but not enlarged. Head: certain aspects not visible (not possible to remove whitish glue used to stick specimen to card). Antennae: slightly longer than GHW; scape longer than FS; all FS elongate slender at least 3 times as long as wide or longer. Abdomen ( Figs 439−444 View FIGURES 437−448 ): LO in V7 parallel sided with a slightly acute posterior margin which just reaches into the apically rounded MPP which inclines slightly dorsally; lateral and posterior margins of dorsal surface of V7 dorsally reflexed, not engulfing any abdominal tergites. T8 ( Figs 439, 440, 442−444 View FIGURES 437−448 ): subparallel sided, with posterior margin narrowly inclined ventrally but not enveloping the MPP; anterolateral arms of T8 elongate slender, expanded in vertical plane and longer than posterior entire portion of T8; bearing short pointed semimembranous projections on their ventral surface (position indicated on Fig. 440 View FIGURES 437−448 ). Aedeagal sheath ( Figs 447, 448 View FIGURES 437−448 ): posterior margin of tergite rounded; basal 5/7 of sheath sternite very narrow, expanding in apical 2/7 with lateral sclerotized pieces of sternite apically divergent and bearing paired hairy lobes which project beyond the tergite apex. Aedeagus ( Figs 445, 446 View FIGURES 437−448 ): elongate narrow, slightly wider across base of LL than elsewhere; apical half of LL elongate membranous as wide at base as at apex and extending well beyond rounded apex of ML; dorsal base of LL asymmetrical produced on its right side.

Etymolog y. The type locality Phu Pan Mt is used as a noun in apposition, hence phupan.

Remarks. The black terminal abdominal tergites may help to enhance both the intensity and direction of the male flashing pattern and such colouration is seen also in several Abscondita spp.
