Syrphoctonus liparus ( Momoi, 1973) View in CoL
This is a very distinctive species. Two males from the same locality are mentioned in the original description, but no information on the labels or in the description allows identifying the holotype. I here designate a lectotype.
Type material. Lectotype: Mongolia - Bajan-Ölgij aimak, in the valley of the river Chavca-lyn gol, 25km from Somon Cagannuur, 1850m, 0 3.07.1968 (1ɗ). Labelling of the lectotype: MONGOLIA: Bajan-Ölgij aimak; im Tal des Flusses Chavea-; lyn gol, 25 km O von Somon; Cagannuur, 1850 m; Exp.Dr.Z.KASZAB,1968 // Nr.1056; 3.VII.1968 // Homotropus ; liparus ; Det. S. MOMOI,`// Lectotypus; Homotropus ɗ; liparus Momoi ; label: S.Klopfstein 0 6. Paralectotype: 1ɗ from the same date and locality. Additional material: Mongolia - Central aimak, Ulaan chodag, 16km S of Somon Öndörschireet, 1500m, 24.07.1966 (1Ψ) (all HNHM).
Diagnosis. This species belongs to the tarsatorius -group as informally described by Dasch (1964a), as can be judged from the ventrally interrupted prepectal carina, the spiracle of the third tergite located below the suture separating the dorsal from the lateral part of the tergite and the absence of an areolet. S. maculifrons (Cresson, 1865) which occurs in Western North America is probably closely related; it shares with S. liparus the polished and punctated mesosoma, the yellow apical spots on tergites 2–6, and the large and recurved yellow shoulder marks. S. liparus differs from the Nearctic species by the black coxae and by the lack of a yellow stripe between clypeus and eye in the female.
