Elaphropeza ciliatocosta ( Bezzi, 1904a) View in CoL
Erroneous geographical record to Neotropical Region. Elaphropeza ciliatocosta was described from Australia (Brisbane), and Bezzi (1909) registered this species in Bolivia (Maipiri). Rafael (1995) re-described this species based on Bezzi’s Bolivian exemplar since the holotype from Australia was destroyed in 1956 at the Hungarian Natural History Museum ( Smith 1961). However, in the same paper, Rafael raises the possibility of the Bolivian exemplar analysed by him was different from that described from Australia ( Rafael 1995: 737). The Bolivian specimen agrees with the Australian type description on the basis of color of the anterior region of the scutum and number of bristles on the hind tibia, but differ by having a dark postpedicel, black posterior region on scutum and black hind tibia. So, we believe the Bolivian identification was an error on Bezzi’s part and this is actually an undescribed species, and we exclude this Bolivian record from its geographical record. The Bolivian exemplar is quite damaged (head, all legs and left wing missing, scutum damaged, right wing in slide) and, although the abdomen with male terminalia is in a microvial, we prefer not to describe this new species at this time and wait for more exemplars to be obtained. A revision of Australian species is needed, at which time a neotype for this species can be designated.
