Diagnosis

Heteronemertea without lateral horizontal cephalic slits but with a transverse furrow encircling the back of the head; proboscis with three muscle layers (outer longitudinal, middle circular, inner longitudinal), without muscle crosses; rhynchocoel wall circular muscles not interwoven with body wall musculature; proboscis pore subterminal, ventral; dorsal fibrous core of cerebral ganglia branched only at rear into dorsal and ventral points; nervous system with one or two dorsal nerves; dermis with gland cells and gelatinous connective tissue intermingled and also with distinct circular fibres; caudal cirrus absent; cephalic glands well developed or none; frontal organ present or none; eyes absent; cerebral sensory organs small; sexes separate.

Gibson (1994) has given a diagnosis for the genus Oxypolia Punnett, 1901 which shares a lot of similarities with the genus Oxypolella .
