Goodyera malipoensis Q.X.Guan & S.P.Chen View in CoL , sp. nov. (Ḣ栗坡*叶兰; Figs. 3,4)
Type:— China. Yunnan (云南): Malipo ( Ḣ 栗坡), terrestrial in evergreen broad-leaved forest on moist and shady slopes, elev. 1500 m, 10 June 2014, Chen 7997 (holotype: FAFU!, isotype: NOCC!) .
Diagnosis: This new species is similar to G. hispida , G. hachijoensis and G. pusilla . The new species differs in its dense pubescent peduncle, the unique shape of ovate-lanceolate petal in the Goodyera genus and the two papillose rows on each side inside the deeply concave-saccate hypochile.
Terrestrial herbs with a creeping rhizome and erect stems, 10–14 cm tall. Stem with 3–5 leaves spaced along stem, abaxially brown-green, adaxially greyish green with white-yellow reticulate venation, ovate lanceolate, 4.0–9.0 × 1.3– 3.6 cm, base cuneate with 2–3 cm long petiole, apex acute. Peduncle slight green, 9–12 cm long, densely pubescent, with 2–3 sterile bracts; rachis 4–8 cm long, 15–25-flowered; floral bracts ovate-lanceolate, 7–9 × 13–15 mm, densely pubescent. Flowers not widely opening, sepals brownish green with white apex, petals white, lip with pale yellow base and white upper parts; pedicel and ovary pale green, cylindric-fusiform, 6–8 mm long, pubescent. Sepals pubescent; dorsal sepal ovate-elliptic, 5.0–5.5 × 2.6–3.0 mm, concave, apex obtuse, enclosed by lateral sepals; lateral sepals ovate, slightly oblique, 5.0–5.5 × 3.0– 3.3 mm, apex obtuse. Petals white, ovate-lanceolate, oblique, 4.5–5.0 × 1.4–1.8 mm, glabrous, apex obtuse; lip ligulate-ovate, 4.5–5.0 mm long; hypochile deeply concave-saccate, 2.0–3.0 × 3.0– 3.5 mm, inside with 2 papillose rows on each side; epichile ligulate, 2.0–2.5 × 1.3–1.7 mm, apex obtuse. Column 0.7–1.5 mm long; anther deltoid-obovoid; pollinia 2, each longitudinally 2-parted, granular-farinaceous, sectile, attached directly to viscidium, rostellum erect, deeply bifid. Fl. July.
Distribution and habitat: –– Goodyera malipoensis is terrestrial and forms scattered colonies on shady, wet areas on slopes at elevations of 1500 m in the evergreen broad-leaved forest of Malipo, Yunnan Province, China.
Conservation status: ––The new species was found in only three populations, each of which consisted of no more than 20 individuals. Using the World Conservation Union Red List Categories and Criteria (IUCN, 2001), G. malipoensis should be treated as critically endangered.
Etymology: ––The species epithet refers to the locality where this new species was first found.
Species recognition: –– Goodyera malipoensis is distinctive among species in the genus because it has dense brownish green pubescence on the peduncle, ovate-lanceolate petal and four papillose rows inside the deeply concavesaccate hypochile. It is morphologically similar to G. hispida , G. hachijoensis and G. pusilla , but can be easily distinguished from the latter two species by the densely pubescent and brownish green peduncle, the pubescent flower and the papillose forming two rows on each side inside the hypochile. Additionally, the leaf (4.0–9.0 × 1.3–3.6 cm) and flower (6.0–7.0 mm in diameter) of G. malipoensis are twice as large as G. hispida (2.5–3.8 × 1.0– 1.6 cm and 3.8 mm in diameter). The petal of G. malipoensis is ovate-lanceolate, and G. hispida is sigmoidly lanceolate.
