Taxonomy. First record from Lebanon as Crenilabrus cinereus (Bonnaterre 1788) View in CoL by George et al. (1964: 20); subsequently recorded as Symphodus cinercus (Bonnaterre) by Mouneimné (1977: 64); as Symphodus cinereus (Bonnaterre 1788) View in CoL by Mouneimné (2002: 193).

Distribution. Mediterranean Sea, Sea of Marmara, Black Sea, eastern Atlantic: Bay of Biscay south to Gibraltar.

Conservation. IUCN: Global ( LC: 25 September 2013); Med. ( LC: 13 November 2007). Capture and threats: HAB, Unknown. Occurrence: Very rare. Medium priority for conservation action .
