(1964: 18); as Lithognathus mormyrus (Linnaeus) View in CoL by Mouneimné (1977: 63); as Lithognathus mormyrus (Linnaeus 1758) View in CoL by Mouneimné (2002: 173); recently recorded as Lithognathus mormyrus View in CoL by Harmelin-Vivien et al. (2005: 629); as Lithognathus mormyrus View in CoL by Bariche et al. (2009: 3). Material in collection: AUBM, BMNH, USNM, YPM, ANSP and MCZ (as Pagellus mormyrus View in CoL ).
Distribution. Mediterranean Sea, Sea of Marmara, Black Sea, eastern Atlantic: Bay of Biscay south to South Africa, including Madeira and Canary Islands; Western Indian Ocean: South Africa north to Mozambique.
Conservation. IUCN: Global ( LC: 16 August 2009); Med. ( LC: 13 November 2007). Capture and threats: FIT, HAB, unknown. Occurrence: Very common. Medium priority for conservation action .
