Distribution: Extreme W Texas, SW and SC New Mexico ( USA); N Chihuahua ( Mexico).

Discussion: Reviewed by Williams and Baker (1974, Mammalian Species No. 36) and Williams and Genoways (1978). Considered a subspecies of bursarius by Hafner and Geluso (1983); phylogenetic separation of arenarius and bursarius established by Jolley et al. (2000).
