NOTES: Lister (1894: 113–114) made reference to the following collections “Lyme Regis, Dorset (L:B.M.83); Black Forest (L:B.M.83); Ohio (L:B.M.83). In BM the slides of these three samples were located. The one from Ohio has a box (BM 1376) from the same locality, date and collector and we believe this is original material from which probably slide L:B.M.83 was taken. For this reason this sample was designated as the lectotype. There is a second box, BM 1377, that according to Ing & Nannenga-Bremekamp (1967), is the type for Symphytocarpus flaccidus (Lister) Ing & Nann. -Brem. and the generitypus specimen for the genus Symphytocarpus Ing & Nann. -Bremek The information on the label is: “[BM] 1377/ Stemonitis splendens Rost. / γ. flaccida/ on fir stumps/ Type (written in pencil)/ Shapwick, Lyme Regis/ leg. Lister July 6.1891” (with a revision label: “ Symphytocarpus flaccidus (Morg) / B. Ing & Nann.-Brem. nov. comb./ Type.– Koninkl. Nederl. Akad./ Wetensch. Ser. C, 70, 218. 1967”). However the collection date (July 6, 1891) does not coincide with that of the slide L:B.M.83 published by Lister (1894), that is dated June 1893, and so we do not believe it to be the original material.
We found comments in notebook IV: 71–73 on the material from Lyme Regis and in notebook VIII: 72 on Morgan’s American material. The var. flaccida , has the characters of “sporocarps weak, adhering to each other, the capillitium lax, scarcely forming a surface net, and the membranous flakes of sporocarps-wall always present”. These characters currently place it in the genus Symphytocarpus and it is the basionym of the species Symphytocarpus flaccidus (Lister) Ing & Nann. -Bremek
In K (http://apps.kew.org/herbtrack/results) one collection [K173669, England, 1850, A. Bloxam (ex herb. W.A. Leighton), A. Lister 715] is preserved but this material is from a previous date and is not cited in the publication.
