Calliephialtes View in CoL is a moderately large genus with 22 species in the Nearctic and Neotropical regions. Seven species are restricted to South America View in CoL , 13 species occur in Central America View in CoL and four in North America View in CoL . Six species, including one unidentified taxon, are found to occur in Mexico.
Calliephialtes coxatus (Smith) View in CoL was included to the list of Mexican species by Ruíz-Cancino et al. (2002) after Morley (1914: 29) and the catalogue of the Neotropical Ichneumonidae ( Townes & Townes 1966) View in CoL , but this record is apparently erroneous (see Remarks under C. coxata ). Described from Mexico Epiurus flavipes Cameron was mistakenly synonymized to C. coxatus View in CoL , but subsequently it was found to be a typical species of Scambus ( Gauld 1991: 185) View in CoL . Record of the Costa Rican species C. ruizi Gauld View in CoL from the State of Tamaulipas, Mexico ( Ruíz-Cancino et al. 2010: 63) is apparently incorrect.
Types of four Costa Rican species, C. picadoi Gauld View in CoL , C. rojasi Gauld et al. View in CoL , C. ruizi Gauld View in CoL and C. sittenfeldae Gauld et al. View in CoL , deposited in the INBio collection, have been examined by the senior author.
Species of Calliephialtes View in CoL are idiobiont ectoparasitoids of a variety of Lepidoptera View in CoL , Coleoptera View in CoL and Diptera View in CoL whose larvae live in galls, nuts, small fruits, mines, cases and similar niches, or hyperparasitoids via the primary ichneumonoid parasitoid of such host ( Gauld 1991; López-Ortega & Khalaim 2011).
