Type species. Cicada hilaris Germar, 1830 View in CoL (“ Australia?” was given as the type locality but it is a New World genus).

Remarks. The genus is widespread through the neotropics with species recorded from the Antilles, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Peru, Surinam, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, Venezuela, Virgin Islands, and West Indies ( Metcalf 1963a; Duffels & van der Laan 1985; Sanborn 2006a; 2007a; 2007b; 2008a; 2010a; 2011a; 2011b; 2013).
