Squalius berak Heckel View in CoL [J. J.] 1843: 1078 [88]; Type locality: Aleppo, Syria. Syntypes: NMW 48915 (6), SMF 469 [ex NMW] (3).
Common name: Pr: Sefid Rodkhaneyi, Aroos
Mahi, En: Mesopotamian chub.
Diagnosis: Mouth subterminal, upper lip projecting beyond lower lip, caudal-, anal- and pelvic fin rays hyaline or with a grey or yellow hue in life, knob on lower jaw symphysis absent.
Meristic characters: D: III 8, A: III 7–8 (8), P: 15–17 (16), V: 9–10 (9), GR: 8–9 (9), LL: 40–45, TV: 40.
Distribution: Tigris basin ( Fig. 267). Found in Little Zab, Boen, Seymareh, Gamasiab, Dinevar, Kashkan, Zemkan, Karon, Karkheh, Dez, Armand, Gaverud and Sirvan Rivers.
Taxonomy: Coad (1991) synonymised with Leuciscus cephalus (Linnaeus, 1758) but Doadrio and Carmona (2006) consider it as full species.
Conservation: IUCN: Least Concern (Freyhof 2014af).
