Distribution: Malayan Peninsula, Borneo and Sumatra, Labuan Isl.

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Two subspecies, gymnura (Sumatra and Malay Peninsula) and alba (Borneo) are recognized; see Corbet (1988:128). The common spelling of the specific epithet as gymnurus is incorrect; see Frost et al. (1991:24).
