Sorex (Sorex) excelsus G. M. Allen 1923

Sorex (Sorex) excelsus G. M. Allen 1923 , Am. Mus. Novit., 100: 4.

Type Locality: "summit of Ho-shan (=Xue Shan), Pae-tai, 30 miles (48 km) south of Chung-tien (=Zhongdian), Yunnan, China, altitude 13000 feet [3962 m]." .

Vernacular Names: Chinese Highland Shrew.

Distribution: Yunnan and Sichuan ( China), and possibly Nepal.

Conservation: IUCN – Data Deficient.

Discussion: Subgenus Sorex . Considered as a possible subspecies of asper ( Corbet, 1978 c) but retained as a full species related to tundrensis by Hoffmann (1987) who also suggested that a specimen from Nepal recorded by Agrawal and Chakraborty (1971) may represent excelsus . However, mtDNA data indicate that excelsus is neither related to asper nor to tundrensis ( Fumagalli et al., 1999) .
