scientific name

Melanelia stygia (L.) Essl.
status

Lichen fahlunensis Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 1143. 1753, nom. utique rej.

"Habitat in Europae rupibus nudis. rupestris." RCN: 8186.

Lectotype ( Jørgensen & al. in Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 115: 308. 1994): Herb. Linn. No. 1273.70 ( LINN) .

Current name: Melanelia stygia (L.) Essl. ( Parmeliaceae).

Note: See discussion by Jørgensen & al. (in Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 307-309, f. 28. 1994). The type of this name is a specimen of Melanelia stygia (L.) Essl. When combined in the same species, “fahlunensis” has priority over the well-known “stygius”. In order to avoid a confusing name change, Jørgensen & al. (in Taxon 43: 648. 1994) successfully proposed the rejection of the name.
