( Figs. 219 View FIGURES 210 – 224 , 227 View FIGURE 227 , 268 View FIGURES 259 – 273 )

Specimens examined. CHINA: Sichuan Province: 1Ƥ (CYI), Lixian County, above Miyaluo, 2700m, 4.V.2008, Y. Imura leg. (1Ƥ dissected).

Identification. The following male characters were described or illustrated in the original description ( Boucher & Kral 1997): 1) ventral tooth of the mandible in lateral view (for large and medium-sized males only) present; 2) anterior margin of the mentum not protruding medially; 3) depressed longitudinal striations on the elytra deeper than in Ceruchus sinensis ; 4) yellow setae on posterior half of the mesofemur in ventral view dense and markedly long; 5) yellow setae on inner apex of the mesotibia long, widely distributed, dense and forming a broad brush; 6) caudal end of the penis noticeably protruding beyond the paramere in natural shape; 7) central split on caudal margin of the basal piece of the aedeagus in ventral view narrow and shallow, forming a small Y-shaped gap, with two sides flat and not protruding; 8) ventral margin of the paramere not forming a sharp corner; 9) endophallus narrow and short, not longer than half of penis; 10) penis in ventral view thin and not swollen in middle; 11) dorsal surface of the penis in lateral view slightly incurved, without wings along the margins.

The female was poorly described and only one important character is readable: the pronotum without a pair of the isolated protuberances outside of the transversal carina. The female paratype of Ceruchus deuvei was subsequently photographed and published by Araya (2002), from which two more characters are identified as follows: 1) anterior angle of the pronotum not an acute angle; 2) flattened marginal area of the pronotum markedly narrower than in Ceruchus minor . These characters can be regarded as the basis of identification for females of Ceruchus deuvei . A female specimen examined by the authors from Miyaluo, Lixian, a locality near the type locality of Ceruchus deuvei , matches the above-mentioned characters.

Distribution ( Fig. 293 View FIGURE 293 ). This species was originally described from the Shuangqiao valley of the Siguniang Mountains (type locality) and Shade, on the west slope of the Gongga Mountains. It was also recorded by the authors from Miyaluo, Lixian. The female paratype of Ceruchus katerinae from Hailuogou (east slope of the Gongga Mountains) is supposed to be Ceruchus deuvei . Boucher & Kral (1997) doubted the Bomans (1994) record of “ Ceruchus sinensis ” from Barkam (Ma-er-kang) as a possible misidentification of Ceruchus deuvei , but this record needs to be confirmed as Ceruchus minor is distributed in the nearby area of southern Gansu.
