Pollex (Pollex) crispus Fibiger, new species

( Plate 11 View PLATE 11 , figure 7; male genit. plate 21, figure 1)

Material examined.

Holotype: male, Indonesia, Sulawesi N, Dumoga Bone National Park , 12.ii.1985, genit. prep. 4463 M. Fibiger. Coll. BMNH.

Diagnosis.

Imago (external).

Wingspan: 13 mm.

Forewing: narrow, dark brown, terminal area blackish brown.

Transverse lines: brown; terminal line marked by black dots between veins.

Reniform: distinct, whitish grey, outlined by black.

Hindwing: unicolorous brown with an indistinct, black discal spot.

Underside: unicolorous brown.

Male genitalia.

Tegumen: narrow.

Vinculum: short, stout.

Saccus: V-shaped, short.

Fultura superior: Y-shaped with short narrow arms, fused medially with tegumen and ventrally broadly with juxta-anellus plate.

Valve: longer than wide.

Saccus: much longer than wide.

Ampulla: asymmetrical; long, very narrow, curved, especially towards apex, much shorter than pollex, densely setose with long hair-like, inwardly bent setae.

Pollex : asymmetrical; enormously long, upturned, slightly broader subapically, densely setose with long hairlike, inwardly bent setae especially along ventral and outer margin.

Digitus: reduced to a costal, semi-circular, irregular knob.

Juxta-anellus plate: much higher than wide.

Phallus: extremely long and narrow, broadest by ductus ejaculatorius; sharply curved medially and apically; slightly tapered towards apex; coecum long and pointed.

Vesica: unarmed.

Differential diagnosis.

P. (P.) crispus differs from the other species of the genus by almost all genital features (see under the subgenus), from the related species of Pollex (Pollex) furca by the much shorter fultura superior, the smoothly curved ampulla, the large pollex, the abortive digitus, and the longer, narrower phallus.

Pollex (Pollex) furca , new species

Material examined.

Holotype: male, Indonesia, Sulawesi N, Dumoga Bone National Park , 19.ii.1985, genit. prep. 4465 M. Fibiger. Coll. BMNH.

Paratypes: 1 male: with same data as holotype, genit. prep. 4468 M. Fibiger. Coll. BMNH .

Diagnosis.

Wingspan: 13 mm.

Forewing: narrow, light brown, subterminal area dark brown.

Transverse lines: brown; terminal line marked by black dots between veins.

Reniform: distinct, whitish grey, outlined by black.

Fringes: coloured like terminal area.

Hindwing: unicolorous brown with an indistinct, black discal spot.

Underside: unicolorous brown.

Male genitalia.

Tegumen: narrow.

Vinculum: very short, stout.

Saccus: U-shaped, very short.

Fultura superior: enormously long, reaching far beyond top of tegumen; with a spine-like process apically on each side; ventrally narrowly, fused with juxta-anellus plate.

Valve: much longer than wide.

Saccus: much longer than wide.

Ampulla: asymmetrical; huge, narrow, right ampulla straight, slightly upturned and club-like apically; densely setose with long hair-like, inwardly bent setae; left ampulla mainly fused with pollex; left ampulla and pollex with free, blunt apices.

Pollex : asymmetrical; huge, broad, right pollex straight, slightly upturned apically; densely setose with long hair-like, inwardly bent setae, especially on outer margin; left pollex mainly fused with ampulla; left pollex and ampulla with free, blunt apices.

Digitus: right digitus a small, medially broad, apically pointed process; left digitus like two thin twigs fused together, outer one longer.

Juxta-anellus plate: higher than wide.

Phallus: extremely long and narrow, broadest by ductus ejaculatorius, smoothly curving through 180°, slightly tapered towards apex; coecum relatively short and apically rounded.

Vesica: unarmed.

Differential diagnosis.

P. (P.) furca resembles P. (P.) crispus ; the differences are described under P. (P.) crispus .
