An easily recognizable species because of the unique oval shape of vein cu-a of forewing; in addition, the vein is shorter than normal (subequal to length of vein 1Cua), the first metasomal tergite is very slender and the face is bicolored.

Hymenochaonia katyvandusenae is named to honor Mrs. Katy Van Dusen of Monteverde and Cuajiniquil for her decades of support of ACG activities with birds and marine projects, and chief collaborator with Frank Joyce.
