Genus: Juraheterosmylus View in CoL gen. nov.
Type species: Juraheterosmylus antiquatus sp. nov.
Etymology. The new genus name is a combination of Jura- (meaning, Jurassic) and Heterosmylus (a genus of Protosmylinae).
Diagnosis. Forewing moderate size (19–24mm long). Membrane hyaline, with few spots; trichosors present along anterior and distal margins. Costal region broad, cross-veins simple and with few distal forks. r1-rs cross-veins no more than 10 branches. Rs branches slightly zigzagged in middle, cross-veins in radial sector arranged regularly, forming 3 rows of gradate series. MP forked close to the separation of MA from Rs. Cu forked at the wing base, both branches approximately with equal length. A1 long, beyond the half of CuP. A2 and A3 well developed, with 2–3 distal branches.
Remarks. Juraheterosmylus is assigned to Protosmylinae by the following characters: forewing with few markings besides pterostigma; cross-veins in redial sector arranged regularly, less than 3 in number besides the gradate series; Rs branches slightly zigzagged. However it also possesses some attributes that are different from the other genera: six r1-rs cross-veins (while the number commonly exceeds 10 others); complicated distal forks of Rs (deep and multiple forks in the new genus), while Rs branches generally have shallow simple distal forks; Cu forked at the wing base, forming two approximately equal branches, while the fork commonly with a short distant to the wing base and both branches distinctly are unequal. Furthermore the new genus also has a relatively well-developed anal region, e.g. A2 and A3 full-developed. The new genus is the oldest record of Protosmylinae. Juraheterosmylus shows evidently more complicated venation that definitely separates it from other genera and is likely the most primitive protosmylines, representing a stem-group of Protosmylinae.
