Genus Ectinogonia Spinola, 1837 View in CoL View at ENA
( Fig. 1 View Figs )
Ectinogonia Spinola, 1837:112 View in CoL .
Type species: Ectinogonia buqueti Spinola, 1837 (by monotypy).
Latipalpis Solier, 1849:499 View in CoL , not Latipalpis Solier, 1833 View in CoL .
Latipalpis Auctorum View in CoL : Obenberger 1930:311.
Kheilia Obeneberger, 1926:96 View in CoL (preoccupied by Kheilia Bolivar, 1898 View in CoL , Orthoptera View in CoL ). Type species: Ectinogonia melichari Obenberger View in CoL (original designation).
Kheiliella Obenberger, 1940:76 (nom. nov. for Kheilia Obenberger, 1926 View in CoL ).
Under this definition, Ectinogonia View in CoL contains 20 species and 2 subspecies, mostly from more arid central and northern habitats of Chile (17 species), but with one species each from Argentina ( auroguttata Burmeister, 1872 View in CoL ), Brasil ( cariosa Nonfried, 1894 View in CoL ), and Bolivia ( melichari Obenberger, 1923 View in CoL ), and two subspecies from Peru. Psiloptera auroguttata Burmeister, 1872 View in CoL (¼ P. impressa Fairmaire View in CoL , ms name) was recorded from ‘‘Pampas’’, assumed to be the Mendoza province in Argentina. It was placed in Ectinogonia View in CoL with a question mark in Obenberger’s catalogue (1930) and until the type is examined the placement remains questionable. In addition, E. cariosa View in CoL should be studied to confirm its correct placement.
Moore (1994) provided generalized distribution maps showing the distribution of all Chilean species of Ectinogonia . Species range from the most arid habitats of the Atacama desert in the north to temperate forests of the western Andes. Specific provincial records exist for Antofagasta, Atacama, Coquimbo south to Chillán. Considering that several species are recorded with wide ranges along the eastern border of Chile , these species possibly extend into western Argentina.
Cobos (1953) recorded species of Ectinogonia associated with Adesmia DC (Fabaceae) , Flourensia DC , Proustia Lag. , Tessaria Ruiz & Pav. (Asteraceae) , Atriplex Linnaeus (Chenopodiaceae) , Nolana Linnaeus (Nolanaceae) Colletia Comm. ex Juss. and Talguenea Miers. (Rhamnaceae) . Moore (1994) recorded additional plant associations with Cristaria Sonner. (Combretaceae) and Fagonia Linnaeus (Zygophyllaceae) . Arias (2000) added a note about E. buqueti adults frequenting species of Colliguaja Molina (Euphorbiaceae) .
