Geographical distribution: endemic to the Neotropical region, from Mexico to Argentina.

Isla de la Juventud, Cayo Piedra, 20.IV.1973, Cuban-Romanian Biospeological Expedition leg., 5 ɗ, 10 Ψ (SDH, SIB) ( Nieser 1977). Santiago de Cuba, Sierra Maestra, afluente del Arroyo La Santana, no date, Zayas leg., no specimen number ( NHMC); Palma Mocha, Arroyo Paco, no date, Zayas leg., no specimen number ( NHMC); Arroyo La Demajagua, no date, Zayas leg., no specimen number ( NHMC) ( Zayas 1986).
Habitat: most common species of the genus in Cuba, found in lakes and slow sections of streams up to 750 m above sea-level. Alayo (1967, 1974) mentioned collecting specimens on almost all Cuban provinces, but did not provide distributional details.
