Type locality: Germany .
Type series: Lost ( Tenorio 1984).
Type host: Cricetus cricetus (Linnaeus, 1758) , the European hamster.
Host range: The main hosts of H. criceti are hamsters and ground squirrels ( Bregetova 1956; Zemskaya 1973; Mašán & Fend’a 2010). Occasionally, the mite has been collected from a broad range of hosts, including different species of voles, mice, mustelids etc.
Distribution: Northern Eurasia eastward to the Russian Far East ( Nikulina 2004; Mašán & Fend’a 2010); Armenia and Iran (Zemskaya 1955; Zemskaya et al. 1975). In Asiatic Russia it has been recorded from South Siberia; an isolated (?) part of species’ range lies in the extreme northeast of Asia, where H. criceti is associated with Spermophilus parryi (Richardson, 1825) , the Beringian ground squirrel ( Yudin et al. 1976).
