Subfamily Tanypodinae View in CoL
The larvae of species in this subfamily occur in diverse habitats including hygropetric areas, seeps, streams/rivers, ditches, ponds, lakes and are mainly free swimming, crawling predators. We have recorded 22 genera and 50 species of this subfamily from Alaska. Most species records come from the Central (15) and Southeastern (18) bioregions, with only two records from the Western bioregion. The most species-rich Tanypodinae genera of Alaska are Procladius , with 11 species, and Ablabesmyia , with 7.
