As noted above the presence of 4 styles on the apical margin of the male subgenital plate is the most distinctive character used in recognising the genus.

Roth (1990b) defined three species groups in Shelfordina .

1) digitata Group is distinguished by the absence of accessory styles, with the interstylar region unmodified. Member: S. digitata (Hanitsch, 1928) —non-Australian.

2) latimarginata Group has accessory styles present with the right and left ones similar in shape. The interstylar margin is strongly modified and bears a pair of large, lobe-like structures. Members: S. jarakae Hanitsch, 1929 , S. latimarginata (Hanitsch, 1928) , S. sumatrensis Roth, 1990 —non-Australian.

3) fuscocastanea Group has accessory styles present with the right and left ones similar or dissimilar in shape depending upon the species. The interstylar region is not strongly modified and does not contain setose lobes. Members: S. cooki Roth, 1990 , S. fuscocastanea (Hanitsch, 1929) , S. minor (Hanitsch, 1929) , S. orchidae (Asahina, 1985) , S. panamae (Hebard, 1920) , S. philippinensis Roth, 1990 , S. robertsi Roth, 1990 , S. spinistylifera (Roth, 1985) , S. terminalis (Brunner v. W., 1898), S. tozerensis Roth, 1990 , S. uniformis (Hanitsch, 1933) , S. yeatesi Roth, 1990 , S. wailimensis Roth, 1990 — Australia, Celebes, Borneo Malaysia, Sumatra. The species in this study fit well into the fuscocastanea Group.
