Quercus brandegeei Goldman, Contr. U.S. Natl. Herb. View in CoL View at ENA 16: 321 (1916). Type:— MEXICO, Baja California Sur :
E. W. Nelson & E. A. Goldman 7475 (Holotype: US00089438!; isotypes: A!, NY!, UCSB (fragment)!). Distribution : Mexico (Baja California, Baja California Sur) .
Quercus breedloveana Nixon & Barrie, Novon View in CoL 25(4): 444, fig. 1 (2017). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: J. L. Contreras 1207 (Holotype: CAS (accn. 752961)!; isotypes: CAS!, FCME, MEXU!). This species is similar to Q. cortesii View in CoL , and further study is necessary to determine if they are really different.
Distribution: Mexico (Chiapas, Guerrero).
Quercus bumelioides Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 188 (1854) View in CoL . Type :— PANAMA, Veraguas: B. Seemann s. n. (Feb 1849) (Holotype: K000575038 !; isotype: BM!) .
Quercus copeyensis C.H.Mull., U.S.D.A. Bur. Pl. Industr. Misc. Publ. View in CoL 477: 30, pl. 31, 32 (1942). Nom. nov. for Q. costaricensis f. kuntzei Trel. (1924) non Q. kunzei Gard. (1890) View in CoL .
Quercus costaricensis Liebm. f. kuntzei Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 146, pl. 283b (1924). Type:— COSTA RICA, Cartago: O. Kuntze 2282 (Holotype: NY; isotype: K!). The specimen at US of Kuntze 2282 does not match the specimen at K or the images in Trelease (1924), pl. 283b of the NY specimen so we do not recognize it as an isotype.
Quercus pacayana C.H.Mull., U.S.D.A. Bur. Pl. Industr. Misc. Publ. View in CoL 477: 30, pl. 30 (1942). Type :— GUATEMALA, Guatemala: P. C. Standley 58467 (Holotype: F0060040 F!; isotypes: F!, NA, UCSB (fragment)!).
Distribution: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico (Chiapas), Nicaragua, Panama.
Quercus calophylla Schltdl. & Cham., Linnaea View in CoL 5(1): 79 (1830). Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: C. J. W. Schiede 24 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): HAL0060349 About HAL !; isolectotypes: G (as s.n.)!, M!). At the time of publication of Q. calophylla, D.F.L. Schlechtendal View in CoL was at B and was not transferred to HAL until 1833 (Stafleu & Cowan 1985, p.190). For this reason, the Schiede 24 holotype would have almost certainly been at B and destroyed; the specimen at HAL should be considered an isotype. It is for this reason that we are lectotypifying the specimen as HAL rather than considering it to be the holotype.
Quercus acuminata M.Martens & Galeotti View in CoL non Roxb. (1832), Bull. Acad. Roy. Sci. Bruxelles 10(1): 217 (1843). See Q. calophylla f. acuminata View in CoL below.

Quercus calophylla f. acuminata Seemen ex Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 203 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: H. Galeotti 96 (Lectotype: BR0000006912253! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 230, pl. 413); isolectotypes: BR!, G!, K!, P!). Quercus acuminata M.Martens & Galeotti (1843) View in CoL non Roxb. (1832) is a later homonym as well as having two syntypes, but the specific epithet of M.Martens & Galeotti was used by Trelease, based on the same type which he effectively lectotypified, as the basis for Q. calophylla f. acuminata View in CoL .
Quercus calophylla f. alamo (Benth.) Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 204 (1924).
Quercus calophylla f. flavida (Liebm.) Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 203 (1924).
Quercus calophylla f. intermedia Seemen ex Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 204, pl. 415 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: H. Galeotti 132 (Holotype: BR0000006913434!; isotypes: BR!, G!, K!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!). This form is based on the later homonym Q. intermedia M. Martens & Galeotti (1843) View in CoL non Boenn. ex Rchb. (1831), but is a legitimate form based on the same type.
Quercus calophylla f. schiedeana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 203 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: C. A. Purpus s. n. (Dec 1914) (Lectotype: ILL00007467 About ILL ! designated by Valencia-A. et al. (1916, p. 256)).
Quercus calophylla f. willdenovii Trel., Mem.Natl.Acad.Sci. 20: 204, pl. 411(1)(1924). Type:— MEXICO, Guanajuato: A. Bonpland 4270 (Holotype: B-W17613010!; isotypes: P!, UCSB (fragment)!).
Quercus candicans auct. non Neé f. alligata Trel., Repert. Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 33: 319 (1934). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: C. Toledo & R. Landa 910 (Syntypes at B destroyed. Neotype: FCME designated by Valencia-A. et al. (2018, p. 256); isoneotype: MEXU (image)!) .
Quercus candicans auct. non Neé f. incurva Trel., Mem. Natl.Acad. Sci. 20: 205, pl. 418(2) (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Jalisco: J. N. Rose 2999 (Lectotype (designated here): US01013695!; isolectotypes: GH!, NY!, US!). Trelease (1924, p. 205, 230) cited just one collection number, but he did not indicate where the specimen was deposited .
Quercus candicans auct. non Neé f. michoacana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 204, pl. 418(1) (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Michoacán: C. G. Pringle 3955 (Lectotype: US01013694! designated by Valencia-A. et al. (1918, p. 256); isolectotypes: A!, BM!, BR!, E!, F!, G!, HBG (image)!, K!, KFTA (image)!, M!, MEL (image)!, MEXU!, MICH!, MO!, MU (image)!, NY!, P!, PH!, S (image)!, UC!, VT!). Although Trelease designated Pringle 3955 as the type collection, we have not found any specimens that match the photograph in plate 418(1).
Quercus chimaltenangana Trel. f. gemmata C.H.Mull., Amer. Midl. Naturalist View in CoL 18(5): 855 (1937). Type:— GUATEMALA, Quiche: A. F. Skutch 1654 (Holotype: ILL00007436 About ILL !; isotypes: A!, F!, NY!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!) .
Quercus flavida Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 178 (1854) View in CoL . Type:— MEXICO, Puebla: F. M. Liebmann 3478 (Lectotype (designated here): C 10012466!; isolectotype: CAS!). Liebmann 3478 was represented at C by two specimens with sheet numbers of Cupulif. Libm. 1 and Cupulif. Libm. 2. On p. 203 Trelease (1924) wrote “ Liebmann, 2, 3478, May, 1841 the type of Q. flavida Liebmann View in CoL ” and on p. 230 in the caption to pl. 412(2) he wrote “The type of Q. flavida View in CoL (Mexico, Liebmann, 2). Photographed by permission at Copenhagen.” The image in pl. 412(2), however, Liebmann 3478 Cupulif. Lbm. 1 is now at CAS and Liebmann 3478 Cupulif. Lbm. 2 is at C. Because of this ambiguity, we are lectotypifying the C specimen.
Quercus intermedia M.Martens & Galeotti View in CoL non Boenn. ex Rchb. (1831), Bull. Acad. Roy. Sci. Bruxelles 10(1): 223 (1843). See Q. calophylla f. intermedia View in CoL above.
Quercus tonaguiae Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 190, pl. 385 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Oaxaca: H. Galeotti 105 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): BR0000030524842 !; isolectotypes: G!, K!, P!). The holotype at B was Galeotti s. n. Trelease (1924, p. 190) wrote that the specimen in Berlin was “referred to be Martens and Galeotti, p. 224, under no. 105, to Q. acutifolia View in CoL .” For this reason we are lectotypifying the BR number as 105 which were the specimens referred to by M. Martens & Galeotti (1843, p. 224). The placement of this species needs additional study, but we consider the type to fall within the variation found within Q. calophylla View in CoL as broadly interpreted.
Distribution: Guatemala, Mexico (Chiapas, Chihuahua, Ciudad de México, Colima, Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero,
Hidalgo, Jalisco, México, Michoacán, Morelos, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora ,
Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Zacatecas). The occurrence of Q. calophylla in Tamaulipas reported by Villaseñor
(2016) needs to be confirmed.
Quercus canbyi Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 188, pl. 379b (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Nuevo León: C. G. Pringle 2393 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): M-0244476!; isolectotypes: AC!, BM!, BR!, CAS!, E!, ENCB (image) !, F!, G!, GH!, HBG (image) !, K!, MEL (image)!, MEXU!, MICH!, MO!, NDG (image)!, NY!, P!, PH!, S (image) !, UC!, UCSB (fragment) !, US!, VT !).
Quercus alamarensis C.H.Mull., J. Arnold Arbor. View in CoL 17(3): 174 (1936). Type:— MEXICO, Nuevo León: C. H. Muller & M. T. Muller 613 (Holotype: A00055614 !; isotypes: MICH!, UCSB (fragment)!).
Quercus canbyi f. ascendens Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 188, pl. 380a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Nuevo León: C. G. Pringle 11705 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): US00089467!; isolectotypes: A!, C!, CAS!, GH!, K!, L!, LE!, MICH!, MO!, L!, VT!).
Quercus canbyi f. attenuata C.H.Mull., J.Arnold Arbor. View in CoL 17(3): 175 (1936). Type:— MEXICO, Nuevo León: C. H. Muller & M. T. Muller 1347 (Holotype: A00055638 !; isotypes: TEX (image)!, UCSB (fragment)!).
Quercus canbyi f. berlandieri Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 188, pl. 380b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Tamaulipas: J. Berlandier 2221 (Holotype: G; isotypes: CAS!, G!, GH!, K!, NY!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!). There are several sheets at G marked as isotypes, but none of them match the holotype shown in Trelease (1924) pl. 380b.
Quercus canbyi f. concolor Trel. & C.H.Mull., Bull. Torrey Bot. View in CoL Club 63(3): 152 (1936). Type:— MEXICO, Nuevo León: C. H. Muller & M. T. Muller 590 (p.p.) (Holotype: ILL00007466 About ILL !; isotypes:TEX (image)!,UCSB (fragment)!). The specimen of C. H. Muller & M. T. Muller 590 at A is Q. glaucoides View in CoL , so it is not an isotype.
Quercus canbyi f. karwinskii (Trel.) C.H.Mull., J. Arnold Arbor. View in CoL 17(3): 175 (1936).
Quercus canbyi f. pedunculata C.H.Mull., J. Arnold Arbor. View in CoL 17(3): 175 (1936). Type:— MEXICO, Nuevo León: C. H. Muller & M. T. Muller 1009 (Holotype: A00055641 !; isotype: UCSB (fragment)!).
Quercus canbyi f. setacea C.H.Mull., J. Arnold Arbor. View in CoL 17(3): 175 (1936). Type:— MEXICO, Nuevo León: C. H. Muller & M. T. Muller 1011 (Holotype: A00055640 !; isotype: UCSB (fragment)!).
Quercus canbyi f. subovatifolia C.H.Mull., J. Arnold Arbor. View in CoL 17(3): 175 (1936). Type:— MEXICO, Nuevo León: C. H. Muller & M. T. Muller 1346 (Lectotype (designated here): A00069937 !; isolectotype: UCSB (fragment)!). Muller (1936) gave this form a name and cited three collection numbers, but he did not designate a type.
Quercus karwinskii Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 188, pl. 379a (1924). Type :— MEXICO: W. F. Karwinski s. n. (Holotype: M!). Trelease (1924. p. 189) wrote “Without data (Karwinski, the type in the Munich herbarium)” and on p. 228 for the caption to pl. 379b he wrote “The type (Mexico, Karwinski).” Plate 379b shows that the sheet at M has the number 464 written on the linen tape holding down the specimen. The tradition of writing numbers on the linen tape is seen on other M specimens and is not to be considered a collection number but rather a consecutive numbering done at M some time during the 19th century for specimens in each family (H.-J. Esser, pers. comm.).
Distribution: Mexico (Chihuahua, Coahuila, Hidalgo, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas).
Quercus castanea Neé, Anales Ci. Nat. View in CoL 3: 276 (1801). Type:— MEXICO, Hidalgo: L. Neé s. n. (1791) (Lectotype: MA25950 ! designated by Bartholomew & Almeda (2022, p. 28); isolectotypes: MA!, UCSB (as to larger leaf from MA lectotype).
Quercus axillaris E.Fourn. ex Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 176, pl. 352a (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Ciudad de México: E. Bourgeau 1138 (Syntypes at B destroyed and at G. Lectotype (designated here): G (00410066) !; isolectotypes: BR!, C!, GH!, K!, MO (fragment)!, MPU!, P!, S (image) !, UCSB (image)!, US!). Trelease (1924, p. 227, pl. 352) cites the type as being both at B and G . There is a sheet at G marked as an isotype which is in fact an isosyntype as it does not match the syntype in Trelease (1924) pl. 352a. We are lectotypifying the name based on the existing isosyntype at G .
Quercus castanea var. sublobata A.DC., Prodr. 16(2.1): 72 (1864). Type :— GUATEMALA: J. R . R. Warszewicz 10 (Holotype: G!) .
Quercus circummontana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 177, pl. 356 (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Veracruz: F. M. Liebmann 3455 (Lectotype (designated here): C 10012544!; isolectotypes: C!, CAS!, MO!, NY!, UCSB (fragment)!). Of the three syntype sheets of 3455 originally at C , one is now at CAS. Trelease (1924, pl. 356) shows closeup images of two sheets of 3455 at C . The bottom image in plate 356 is selected as the lectotype, and the top image is the isolectotype at CAS .
Quercus consociata Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 172, pl. 345a (1924). Type :— GUATEMALA: J. R. R. Warszewicz 9 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): JE00006775 !) .

Quercus impressa Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 181, pl. 364a (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Oaxaca: C. G. Pringle 6029 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): P00754104 !; isolectotypes: A!, AC!, BM!, BR!, CAS!, E!, ENCB (image)!, G!, GH!, HBG (image) !, K!, KFTA (image)!, MEL (image)!, MEXU!, MO!, NDG (image)!, NY!, P!, PH!, S (image) !, UCSB (fragment) !, UC!, US!, VT !).
Quercus lanigera M.Martens & Galeotti, Bull.Acad. Roy. Sci. Bruxelles View in CoL 10(1): 215 (1843). Type:— MEXICO, Oaxaca: H. Galeotti 104 (Lectotype: BR0000006912321 ! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 228, pl. 354); isolectotypes: BR!, G!, K!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!). Although M. Martens & Galeotti (1843) cite only one collection, there are two sheets of this number at BR marked as types, one of which one was effectively lectotypified by Trelease.
Quercus lanigera f. sideroxyloides Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 177, pl. 355 (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Puebla: F. G . Nicolas s. n. (1912) (Holotype: F!) .
Quercus mucronata Willd., Sp. Pl. View in CoL , ed. 4 4(1): 436 (1805). This is a superfluous name as the older name Q. castanea (1801) View in CoL is erroneously cited as a synonym.
Quercus pulchella Bonpl., Pl. Aequinoct. 2: 44, pl. 88 (1809). Type:— MEXICO, Michoacán: A. Bonpland 4230 (Holotype: P00129710 !; isotypes: P (as s.n.)!, UCSB (fragment)!).
Quercus rossii Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 179, pl. 362b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Michoacán: H. Ross 374 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): M-0244474!; isolectotypes UCSB (fragment from M lectotype)!).
Quercus scherzeri Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 172, pl. 343b (1924). Type :— HONDURAS, Comayagua: K. R. von Scherzer s. n. (Apr 1854) (Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 343b)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype.
Quercus seleri Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 181, pl. 364b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Morelos: C. Seler & E. G. Seler 4302 (Holotype at B destroyed. Quercus serrulata Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 179, pl. 361a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Jalisco: M. E. Jones 445 (Holotype: US 00089640!) .
Quercus spathulistipula Trel., Repert. View in CoL Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 33: 319 (1934). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: L. Schultze 332 (Holotype: at B destroyed). The determination of Q. spathulistipula View in CoL as Q. castanea View in CoL is based on the Trelease (1934) description because no images or original specimens exist.
Quercus subcrispata Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 176, pl. 353 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Puebla: G. Arsène 5926 (Holotype: US 00089662!; isotypes: BM!, ILL!, MPU!, PH!) .

Liebmann 3455 (Lectotype (designated here): C 10012544!; isolectotypes: C!, CAS!, MO!, NY!). Trelease (1924, p. 227), in the caption to pl. 341, indicated two collections as the types, so this did not constitute lectotypification. The placement of this species needs additional study, but we consider the type to fall within the variation found within Q. castanea View in CoL as broadly interpreted.
Quercus tristis f. mixcoensis Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 172 (1924). Type :— GUATEMALA, Sacatepequez: W. Trelease 31 (Holotype: ILL00007553 About ILL !) .

Quercus tristis f. sublobata (A.DC.) Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 171 (1924).
Quercus tristis f. vulcani Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 171, pl. 342b (1924). Type :— GUATEMALA, Escuintla: K. R. von Scherzer s. n. (Holotype at W destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 342b)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype.
Quercus verrucosirama Trel., Repert. View in CoL Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 33: 319 (1934). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: L. Schultze 382 (Holotype: at B destroyed). The determination of Q. verrucosirama View in CoL as probably Q. castanea View in CoL is based on the Trelease (1934) description as no images or original specimens exist.
Distribution: El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico (Aguascalientes, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Ciudad de México,
Coahuila, Colima, Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, México, Michoacán, Morelos, Nayarit, Nuevo
León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Zacatecas).
The occurrence of Q. castanea in Chihuahua, Colima, and Nuevo León reported by Villaseñor (2016) needs to be confirmed.
Quercus cedrosensis C.H.Mull., Madroño 16(6): 188, fig. 1–3, 5 (1962). Type :— MEXICO, Baja California Sur: C. H. Muller 10775 (Holotype: UCSB000021 About UCSB !; isotypes: CAS!, G!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!, VT!) .
Distribution: Mexico (Baja California, Baja California Sur). Quercus chrysolepis Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 173 (1854) View in CoL . Type:— U.S.A., California: T. Hartweg 1962 (Lectotype: K000832349! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 222, pl. 209); isolectotypes: K!, UCSB (fragment from K lectotype)!). Liebmann (1854, p. 173) cited six syntypes.
Distribution: Mexico (Baja California, Chihuahua, Sonora), U.S.A. (Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico,
Oregon).
Quercus coahuilensis Nixon & C.H.Mull., Brittonia View in CoL 45(2): 150, fig. 2 (1993). Type :— MEXICO, Coahuila : I. M. Johnston & C. H. Muller 567 (Holotype: BH (image)!). Although we have not seen the holotype, from the description and from those paratypes seen by Breedlove and us, we consider that Q. mexiae is not sufficiently different to justify it as a distinct species from Q. coffeicolor .
Quercus prainiana Trel. Non H. Lév. (1913) ,Mem. Natl.Acad. Sci. 20:138, pl. 262a, pl. 262b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Jalisco: C. G. Trelease (1924, p. 138) designated a type collection number, but on p. 224 in the caption to pl. 262 he did not specify which herbarium, C or K, was to house the holotype. In Plate 262 he has images of one specimen at C and one at K, both of which he called the type which makes both the C and K specimens syntypes. Because this species is a later homonym we are not lectotypifying the name.
Distribution: Mexico (Colima, Durango, Jalisco, Nayarit, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Zacatecas).
Quercus confertifolia Bonpl., Pl. Aequinoct. 2: 53, pl. 94 (1809). Type:— MEXICO, Guanajuato: A. Bonpland 4407 (Holotype: P00129738 !; isotypes: P!, UCSB (fragment)!). Although lectotypified by Valencia-A. & Coombes (2020, p. 89), this was not necessary because the holotype at P has the specimen label in Bonpland’s hand. The isotype most likely was added to P or identified as such at a later date.

Valencia-A. & Coombes (2020, p. 90) designated Seemann 1974 at BM ( BM000643467 !) as the lectotype, but this is an invalid lectotypification, because the holotype as designated by Seemann is in the Hooker Herbarium at K and is the specimen with the herbarium name of Quercus mexicana var. glabrata View in CoL in Liebmann’s hand.

Oersted 3465 (Lectotype (designated here): C 10012470!; isolectotypes: BM!, C!, CAS!, G!, UCSB (fragment)!). Trelease (1924, p. 225) in the caption to pl. 281 wrote “The type (Costa Rica, Oersted, 3465).” In pl. 281 he shows photos taken of the two syntypes now at C, so Trelease’s statement cannot be considered effective lectotypification. We are lectotypifying the specimen shown in the bottom photo of pl. 281.
Quercus endresii Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 145, pl. 280 (1924). Type :— COSTA RICA: A. R. Endres s. n. (Holotype at W destroyed. Quercus errans Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 131, pl. 245a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Hidalgo: T. Hartweg 424 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): G00177569!; isolectotypes: A!, CGE!, G!, K!, LE!, NY!, OXF!, P!). There is no extant collection of the holotype, Hahn 667, which was collected at Perote in Veracruz, Mexico. From the number sequence, Hahn 667 would have been collected in 1865. There is a specimen of Hahn s. n. (1 Jul 1866) both at K and P, but this collection cannot be considered an isotype, as it was collected a year later than the holotype, even though it was collected at the same locality and is an excellent match for the photo of the holotype in Trelease (1924), pl. 245a. On page Trelease (1924) cites several paratypes which include Ehrenberg 895, 896, 920, 1021, and 1284 which, although not stated, were probably all seen by him at B and were destroyed. Of these five collections, the only one that is extant is Ehrenberg 896 from Hidalgo, Mexico now at NY and VT. The photo in pl. 245b is of Hartweg 424 which Trelease also states is “a second collection” of Q. errans View in CoL , so it is also a paratype. The photo of this Hartweg collection was also taken of the specimen at B which is now destroyed. We are choosing Hartweg 424 at G as the lectotype, which is also the lectotype of Q. splendens var. pallidior View in CoL .

Quercus sanchez-colinii Martínez, Anales Inst. Biol. Univ. Nac. Autón. México 24(2): 269, fig. 15 (1953[1954]). Type :— MEXICO, México: E. Matuda 28760 (Holotype: MEXU 01231768!; isotypes: CAS!, MEXU!, UCSB (fragment)!).
Quercus texcocana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 81, pl. 117a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, México: R. Endlich 653 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 117a)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype. The placement of this species needs additional study, but we consider the type to fall within the variation found within Q. diversifolia as broadly interpreted.
Quercus texcocana var. ampla Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 81, pl. 117b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, México: R. Endlich 655 (Holotype at B destroyed. Muller 1277 (Holotype: A00055663 !; isotypes: TEX (image)!, UCSB (fragment)!). The placement of this species needs additional study, but we consider the type to fall within the variation found within Q. durifolia View in CoL as broadly interpreted.
Quercus flocculenta f. incisa C.H.Mull., J.Arnold Arbor. View in CoL 17(3): 173 (1936). Type:— MEXICO, Nuevo León: C. H. Muller & M. T. Muller 1276 (Holotype: A00055664 !; isotype: UCSB (fragment)!).

Quercus dysophylla Benth., Pl.Hartw. 55(1840).Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: T. Hartweg421 (Holotype:K000512275!; isotypes: BM!, CGE!, E!, LD (image)!, OXF (as mislabel #1963)!, UCSB (fragment)!). This species has been considered by some to be of hybrid origin between Q. crassifolia and Q. crassipes (Govaerts & Frodin 1998, Villaseñor 2016, López C. et al. 2017), but we consider the type collection to not be a hybrid.
Quercus esperanzae Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 132, pl. 248 (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Puebla: C. A. Purpus 5332 (Holotype: F0060028 F!; isotypes: BM!, GM!, BM!, MEXU!, MO!, UC!, UCSB (fragment)!). Although Trelease (1924, p. 224) in the caption for pl. 248 wrote “The type (Mexico, Purpus 5332). Photographed by permission at N. Y.” the actual specimen in plate 248 is at F .
Quercus floccosa Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 178 (1854) View in CoL . Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: F. M. Liebmann 3479 (Lectotype: C 10012481! Designated by Trelease (1924, p. 223, pl. 232a); isolectotypes: CAS! UCSB (fragment from C lectotype)!). The placement of this species needs additional study, but we consider the type to fall within the variation found within Q. dysophylla View in CoL as broadly interpreted.
Quercus fournieri Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 177, pl. 357 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: L. Hahn s. n. (Jun 1866) (Holotype: P00077457!; isotypes: BM (as 255)!, K (as 255)!, UCSB (fragment from P holotype)!). At P there are three sheets with the name Q. ferruginea View in CoL , two of which have the number 258 and one which is s.n. This name was apparently being proposed by Fournier as a new species as “n sp.” is written on the s.n. sheet. Trelease (1924, p. 178) realized that this would be a later homonym of Q. ferruginea Michaux (1812) View in CoL and published the new name, Q. fournieri View in CoL , (Trelease 1924, p. 178, pl. 357). He cites “ Hahn 255, June, 1866” at P as the type although there is no Quercus View in CoL specimen at P with the number Hahn 255. In the caption to plate 357 Trelease states “The type (Mexico, Hahn, 255)” which is in fact a close-up of the s.n. specimen at P. On the label for the P specimen of Hahn s. n. the date was originally written as “ Juillet 1866 ” with the month crossed out and in the same hand changed to “Juin.” Both BM and K have specimens distributed from P which are labeled Hahn 255 and dated as being collected in July 1866. With the mixup of numbers and dates but clearly Hahn s. n. at P (1924, pl. 357) being indicated as “the type”, the P specimen of Hahn s. n. at P is the holotype and the specimens of Hahn 255 at BM and K are probably isotypes. There is no mixup in the identity of any of these specimens as they are all Q. dysophylla View in CoL . The type fragment at UCSB taken by C.H. Muller from a specimen at P is labeled “ Hahn 255?” indicating that Muller was aware of this number mixup by Trelease and also that P did not in fact have a collection of Hahn 255. The UCSB fragment which consists of a single leaf is undoubtedly a fragment from the Hahn s. n. holotype.
Quercus hahnii Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 131, pl. 247 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Ciudad de México: L. Hahn 347 (Holotype: C 10012474!; isotypes: P!, UCSB (fragment from C holotype)!).
Quercus imbricariifolia Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 174, pl. 348ª (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Ciudad de México: E. Bourgeau 425 (Lectotype (designated here): P06814111!; isolectotypes: BM!, K!, MPU!, UCSB (fragment)!). The holotype, Endlich 1012, was destroyed at B; no isotypes have been found in any herbarium. We are lectotypifying the name based on the paratype. One of the specimens at P of Bourgeau 425 is Q. crassipes View in CoL so it cannot be considered an isolectotype, but alternative interpretation would place this species as a synonym of Q. crassipes View in CoL .
Quercus sagata E.F.Warb., Bull. Misc. Inform. Kew 1939 View in CoL (2): 90 (1939). Type:— MEXICO, México: G. B. Hinton 6577 (Holotype: K000575022 !; isotypes: A!, F!, GBH (image)!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!). The status of this taxon needs additional study as the type has some similarities to Q. hintonii View in CoL .
Distribution: Mexico (Chiapas, Ciudad de México, Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, México,

This species is close to Q. laurina , and additional study is needed to determine if it is really distinct.
Quercus eduardi f. cespitifera Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 122, pl. 219b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Guanajuato: W. Schumann 1311 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 219a)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype.
Quercus oligodonta Seemen View in CoL non Saporta (1879), Bot. Jahrb. Syst. 29(1): 96 (1900). See Q. eduardi View in CoL above.
Distribution: Mexico (Durango, Guanajuato).
Quercus elliptica Neé, Anales Ci. Nat. View in CoL 3: 278 (1801). Type:— MEXICO, Hidalgo: L. Neé s. n. (1791) (Lectotype: MA25956 ! designated by Bartholomew & Almeda (2022, p. 28); isolectotypes: MA!, UCSB (fragment from MA lectotype)!, UCSB (fragment)!). Although the type is reported to be from Hidalgo, no subsequent collections have been made from there. It is possible that Neé’s record was not correctly reported.
Quercus acutangula Trel., Repert. View in CoL Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 33: 318 (1934). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: L. Schultze 483 (Holotype: at B destroyed). The tentative determination of Q. acutangula View in CoL as probably Q. elliptica View in CoL is based on the Trelease (1934) description as no images, isotype, or other original material exist. Trelease, however, does mention the twigs being tomentose which is a characteristic of Q. elliptica View in CoL , so the synonymy is uncertain.
Quercus atrescentirhachis Trel., Repert. View in CoL Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 33: 317 (1934). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: L. Schultze 347 (Syntypes at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): ILL00007471 About ILL ! (fragment)). ILL also has a fragment from Schulze 384 which Trelease (1934, p. 317) cites as “Also? (no. 384), with rather shallow cupules, 10–15 mm in diameter with apressed somewhat keeled scales and round-ovoid acorns.” Both L. Schultze 447 and 384 are Q. elliptica View in CoL .

Quercus ignaciensis C.H.Mull., Amer. Midl. Naturalist View in CoL 27(2): 475 (1942). Type:— MEXICO, Sonora: H. T. Green s. n. (26 Feb 1938) (Holotype: PH00023359!; isotype UCSB (fragment from PH holotype)!). The placement of this species needs additional study, but we consider the type to fall within the variation found within Q. elliptica View in CoL as broadly interpreted.
Quercus incrassata Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 147, pl. 287 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Chiapas: E. Reeves 7 (Holotype: ILL00009824 About ILL !). The K s.n. sheet is almost certainly a syntype as it is the right taxon from the right locality on the right date.
Quercus nectandrifolia Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 175 (1854) View in CoL . Type:— MEXICO, Oaxaca: F. M. No original material exists, so the only information is Trelease’s (1934) description. Quercus porriginosa View in CoL to be a synonym of Q. elliptica View in CoL , but Breedlove thought that it might be Q. peduncularis View in CoL .
Quercus pubinervis M.Martens & Galeotti, Bull. Acad. Roy. Sci. Bruxelles View in CoL 10(1): 211 (1843). Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: H. Galeotti 134 (Holotype: BR!; isotypes: G!, P!, UCSB (fragment from BR holotype)!).

Quercus emoryi Torr. , Notes Milit. Reconn. 152, pl. 9 (1848). Type:— U.S.A., Texas: W. H. Emory s. n. (17 Oct 1846) (Lectotype: NY00248636 ! designated by Landrum (1992, p. 240)).
Quercus balsequillana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 123, pl. 220a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Chihuahua: R. Endlich 1278 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 220a)!). Trelease (1924, p. 123) wrote that the type is Endlich 1275 but on p. 223 in the caption to pl. 220a he says the type is Endlich 1278. One or the other is probably a typographic error, but in any case, the type at B was destroyed.
Quercus duraznillo Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 122, pl. 220b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Chihuahua: C. G. Pringle 2112 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): A00970050!). The holotype was Endlich 1277b, and there are no extant isotypes. The lectotype is chosen from the only extant paratype which has spiny leaves like Q. duraznillo f. pinetorum , but both are Q. emoryi .
Quercus duraznillo f. bullata Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 123, pl. 221a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Chihuahua: R. Endlich 1277a (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 221a)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype.
Quercus duraznillo f. cochutensis Trel., Mem. Natl.Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 123 (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Sonora: C. V. Hartman 72 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): GH00071010 !) .

Quercus engelmannii Greene, Ill. W. Amer. Oaks 1: [33], pl. 15 figs. 2 & 3, pl. 17 (1889). Type:— U.S.A., California: E.L. Greene s. n. (16 Feb 1877) (Lectotype (designated here): NDG01270 About NDG !). It is uncertain whether there was ever an Albert Kellogg holotype of this species, but if there ever was one at CAS, it was not saved from the 1906 fire. The illustrations in Greene’s publication are by Kellogg. Greene collected this species in 1877 which is the one we are designating as the lectotype. Other collections by Greene at NDG were collected after the publication of the species, so the collection available to Greene at the time of the publication is the one appropriate for lectotypification.
Distribution: Mexico (Baja California), U.S.A. (California).
Quercus epileuca Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 126, pl. 229a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Sonora: C. V. Hartman 337 (Holotype: NY00253687 !; isotypes: A!, GH!, K!, UCSB (fragment from NY holotype)!, US!) .

Nom. nov. for Q. hypoleuca Engelm (1876) View in CoL non Miq. (1858). The type is similar to Q. scytophylla Liebm. View in CoL , a species described from Oaxaca. Additional study is necessary to confirm our proposed synonymy.
Distribution: Mexico (Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, México, Sinaloa, Sonora, Zacatecas), U.S.A. (Arizona, New
Mexico, Texas).
Quercus flagellifera Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 162, pl. 319 (1924). Type:— GUATEMALA, Alta Verapaz: O. F. Cook & R. F. Griggs 607 (Holotype: US 00089512!). This species is similar to Q. cortesii View in CoL , and additional study may show that they should be treated as the same species.
Distribution: Guatemala.
Quercus frutex Trel., Mem. Natl.Acad. Sci. 20: 82, pl. 120a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Ciudad de México: E. Bourgeau 68 (Holotype: C 10012503!; isotype: UCSB (fragment from C holotype)!).
Quercus frutex var. uhdeana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 83 (1924). Type:— MEXICO: Uhde 295 (Holotype: at B destroyed). Because no images or original material of Q. frutex var. uhdeana View in CoL exist, the determination of this variety as probably Q. frutex View in CoL is based on the Trelease (1924, p. 83) description and the fact that he also cited Uhde 295 as possibly a paratype of Q. vallicola (Trelease 1924, p. 81) View in CoL which is a later homonym and treated here as a synonym of Q. frutex View in CoL . It is also possible that Q. frutex var. uhdeana View in CoL may be a synonym of Q. microphylla View in CoL according to an anonymous reviewer (per. commun.).
Quercus intricata Trel. f. angusta Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 85, pl. 127b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Hidalgo: C. G. Pringle 13286 (Holotype: US00089548!; isotypes: CAS!, F!, GH!, LL (image)!, MEXU!, MICH!, TEX (image)!, UC!, VT!).
Quercus vallicola Trel. non Gand. (1890), Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 81, pl. 116b (1924). Type:— Mexico, Ciudad de México: Uhde 296 (Holotype: B destroyed). There are apparently no isotypes, but because Q. vallicola Trel. is a later homonym, we are not lectotypifying the image of the holotype in Trelease (1924, pl. 116b). The placement of this species needs additional study, but we consider the type to fall within the variation found within Q. frutex as broadly interpreted.
