QUERCUS View in CoL View at ENA L.
Quercus acherdophylla Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 183, pl. 367 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Puebla: C. G. Pringle 10008 (p.p.) (Syntypes at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): K000512971 ! based on collections made 25 Sep 1904; isolectotypes A!, BM!, CAS!, E!, ENCB (image)!, F!, G!, GH!, HBG (image)!, ILL!, MEXU!, MO!, NY!, P!, PH!, US!, VT!). Pringle used the same collection number for specimens he collected in flower on 25 Apr 1904 and in fruit on 25 Sep 1904. In 1988 K.C. Nixon marked the K specimen, which has collections from both dates, as the lectotype. We are designating just the 25 Sep 1904 collection as the lectotype, with the 25 Apr 1904 collection of the K specimen remaining as an isosyntype. This species is close to Q. salicifolia View in CoL , and additional study is needed to determine if it is really distinct.
Distribution: Mexico (Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Puebla, Veracruz).
Quercus acutifolia Neé, Anales Ci. Nat. View in CoL 3: 267 (1801). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: L. Neé s. n. (1791) (Lectotype: MA25953 ! designated by Nixon & Barrie (2017, p. 449); isolectotypes: M!, UCSB (fragment)!). We also have seen a possible isolectotype at MPU .
Quercus acutifolia var. bonplandii A.DC., Prodr. View in CoL 16(2.1): 66 (1864). Type:— MEXICO, Michoacán: A. Bonpland 3917 (Lectotype (designated here): P06779600 !; isolectotypes: B-W!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!). Trelease (1924, p. 229, pl. 391a) lectotypified the name on Bonpland 3917 at B, but it was destroyed. The specimen of Bonpland 3917 at B-W is not the one illustrated by Trelease.
Quercus acutifolia var. conspersa (Benth.) A.DC., Prodr. 16(2.1): 66 (1864).
Quercus acutifolia Neé var. longifolia A.DC., Prodr. 16(2.1): 67 (1864). Type:— Mexico, Veracruz: A. Ghiesbreght 124 (Lectotype: G! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 229, pl. 387); isolectotypes: K!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!). Trelease (1924, p. 229, pl. 387) lectotypified the name based on one of the syntypes.
Quercus acutifolia var. microcarpa A.DC., Prodr. 16(2.1): 67 (1864). Type :— GUATEMALA: J. R. R. Warszewicz 25 (Holotype: G004100 !; isotypes: K!, S (image)!, UCSB (fragment from G holotype)!).
Quercus candolleana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 191, pl. 387 (1924). Nom. nov. for Q. acutifolia Neé var. longifolia A.DC. (1864) View in CoL non Q. longifolia Raf. (1838) View in CoL nec Liebm. (1854).
Quercus conspersa Benth., Pl. Hartw. View in CoL 91 (1842). Type:— GUATEMALA, Santa Rosa: T. Hartweg 617 (Lectotype (designated here): K000512983 !; isolectotypes: BM!, CGE!, G!, K!, LD (image)!, NY!, UCSB (fragment)!). There are two sheets of Hartweg 617 in the Bentham Herbarium at K, one of which is lectotypified here.
Quercus conspersa f. caudata Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 192 (1924). Type :— GUATEMALA, Baja Verapaz: F. C . Lehmann 1320 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): G!; isolectotype: BM!) .
Quercus conspersa f. ovatifolia Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 192, pl. 389b (1924). Type :— GUATEMALA: J. R. R. Warszewicz 28 (Holotype: G!; isotype UCSB (fragment from G holotype)!).
Quercus correpta Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 153, pl. 300b (1924). Nom. nov. for Q. acutifolia var. microcarpa (1864) non Q. microcarpa Lapeyr (1813) .
Quercus grahamii Benth. var. coyulana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 190 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Oaxaca: C. Conzatti 3553 (Lectotype (designated here): US00089536!; isolectotype: MEXU!). Trelease (1924, p. 190) did not indicate where the type specimen was deposited.
Distribution: Guatemala, Mexico (Chiapas, Ciudad de México, Coahuila, Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo,
Jalisco, México, Michoacán, Morelos, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa ,
Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Zacatecas). The occurrence of Q. acutifolia in Ciudad de México, Coahuila, Colima,
Durango, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Querétaro, Sinaloa, and Tamaulipas reported by Villaseñor (2016) needs to be confirmed.
Quercus affinis Scheidw., Hort. Belge. 4: 321, 17 (1837). Type:— MEXICO, Hidalgo: H. Galeotti 115 (Lectotype (designated here): BR0000006914974 !; isolectotypes: BR!, G!, K!, P!). The date of 1840 on Galeotti collections is not the actual collection date, but rather the date the numbers were assigned back in Europe (McVaugh 1978). The actual collection date for what was assigned the number 115 in 1840 was probably 1836.
Quercus affinis f. commutata Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 167 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: C. J. W. Schiede 18 (p.p.) (Lectotype: G! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 227, pl. 333a); isolectotype: HAL!). Quercus commutata Liebm. (1854) View in CoL non Unger (1852) is a later homonym, but the specific epithet of Liebmann was used by Trelease (1924, p. 167), based on the same type, as the basis for Q. affinis f. commutata View in CoL . The specimen of Schiede 18 (p.p.) at G and one of the two sheets at HAL are from Jalacingo, whereas the other sheet at HAL and the ones at HBG, MO, and the fragment at UCSB are from Xalapa, as is the lectotype of Q. xalapensis f. jalapae View in CoL .
Quercus affinis f. subintegra (A.DC.) Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 167 (1924).
Quercus commutata Liebm. View in CoL non Unger (1852), Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 177 (1854). Although this was lectotypified by Trelease (1924, p. 227, pl. 333a) and treated by him as a forma of Q. affinis View in CoL , at the specific level it is a later homonym of a fossil oak species.
Quercus laurina Bonpl. var. major (A.DC.) Wenz., Jahrb. K View in CoL ̂nigl. Bot. Gart. Berlin 3: 205 (1884).
Quercus laurina var. podocarpa (A.DC.) Wenz., Jahrb. K View in CoL ̂nigl. Bot. Gart. Berlin 3: 205 (1884).
Quercus major (A.DC.) Trel. View in CoL non Nakai (1916), Contr. U.S. Natl. Herb. 23(2): 193 (1922).
Quercus nitens M.Martens & Galeotti non Raf. (1838), Bull. Acad. Roy. Sci. Bruxelles 10(1): 217 (1843). This is an illegitimate name because it is both a later homonym and is based on the same type as Q. affinis Scheidw. (1837) .
Quercus nitens M.Martens & Galeotti non Raf. (1838) var. major A.DC., Prodr. 16(2.1): 69 (1864). Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: F. M. Liebmann 3518 (Lectotype (designated here): C10012540!; isolectotypes: CAS!, GH!, K (as s.n.)!, NY!, P (as s.n.)!, UCSB (fragment)!). Although A.de Candolle (1864) did not cite the Liebmann number of the specimens at C for this variety, he did cite it by locality and elevation. The Liebmann collection corresponding to “montis Orizabae, loc Alpatlahua dieto, alt. 7500 p.” is number 3518 collected in Sep 1841. A.de Candolle’s determined, in his hand, two of the three specimens at C plus the sheet now at CAS which was formerly at C as Q. nitens var. major .
Quercus nitens M.Martens & Galeotti non Raf. (1838) var. podocarpa A.DC., Prodr. 16(2.1): 69 (1864). Type:— MEXICO, Puebla: F. M. Liebmann 3441 (Lectotype (designated here): C 10012509!; isolectotypes: C!, CAS!, P (as s.n.)!). Trelease (1924) in the caption to pl. 335a wrote “The type, as of Q. nitens podocarpa (Mexico, Liebmann, 3441).” The photo in plate 335a is of unmounted fragments photographed at C which do not correspond to any of the mounted sheets of Liebmann 3441. We are lectotypifying one of the C specimens of Liebmann 3441.
Quercus nitens M.Martens & Galeotti non Raf. (1838) var. subintegra A.DC., Prodr. 16(2.1): 69 (1864). Type:— MEXICO, Hidalgo: T. Hartweg 422 (Holotype: G00358099 !; isotypes: BM!, CGE!, E!, G!, K!, L!, NY!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!).
Quercus ocoteifolia Liebm. f. confusa Trel., Mem. Natl.Acad. Sci. 20: 168, pl. 335b (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Oaxaca: F. M . Liebmann 3514 (Holotype: G (as 60–64)!; isotypes: C (as 62)!, CAS (as 63)!, GH (as 60–65)!). Liebmann 3514 also was assigned individual sheet numbers 60–62 through 60–65. Trelease (1924, p. 168) wrote that the type is 60–64, and in the caption of plate 335b on p. 220 he indicated that the type is at C . The photo in pl. 335b, however, is the specimen labeled 60–64 at G .
Quercus ocoteifolia f. podocarpa (A.DC.) Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 168, (1924).
Quercus treleaseana A.Camus, Bull. Mus. Natl. Hist. Nat. View in CoL , sér. 2, 4: 124 (1932). Nom. nov. for Q. major (A. DC.) Trelease (1924) View in CoL non Nakai (1916) based on Q. nitens var. major View in CoL . Even as a nom. nov. Q. treleaseana View in CoL is an illegitimate name because it is based on the same type as Q. affinis Scheidw. View in CoL
Distribution: Mexico (Chiapas, Ciudad de México, Coahuila, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, México,
Michoacán, Morelos, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, Veracruz). The occurrence of Q. affinis in Guerrero, Jalisco, and Michoacán reported by Villaseñor (2016) needs to be confirmed.
Quercus agrifolia Neé, Anales Ci. Nat. View in CoL 3: 271 (1801). Type:— U.S.A., California: J. Robredo & M. Esquerra s. n. (1791) (Lectotype: MA25959 ! designated by Bartholomew & Almeda (2022, p. 28); isolectotypes: MA!, UCSB (fragment from MA lectotype)!, UCSB (fragment from MA isolectotype)!). The locality on the MA labels is between Monterey and Nootka. Although the type locality is unknown, it is most likely in the vicinity of Monterey , California (Bartholomew & Almeda 2022).
Distribution: Mexico (Baja California), U.S.A. (California).
