Quercus greggii (A.DC.) Trel., Contr. U.S. Natl. Herb. View in CoL View at ENA 23(2): 185 (1922).

Quercus aculcingensis Trel., Contr. U.S. Natl. Herb. 23(2): 185 (1922). Nom. nov. for Q. reticulata Bonpl. var. crassifolia Oerst. (1869) non Q. crassifolia Benth. (1809) .

Quercus alpescens Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 83, pl. 122b (1924). Type:— MEXICO: C. Ehrenberg 109 2 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): P00754039 !). Trelease (1924, p. 83) wrote “ Ehrenberg, 1091–3, Jan., 1840, the types” and on p. 219 for the caption of pl. 122b he wrote “The type (Mexico, Ehrenberg, 1093)” for a photograph of a specimen at B. The first statement indicates that there were three syntypes, but the second statement indicates that there is just the holotype. In either case all three specimens would have been at B and were destroyed.

Quercus loeseneri Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 79, pl. 110b (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Coahuila: C. G. Pringle 10120 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): US 00089566!; isolectotypes: C!, E!, G!, GH!, HBG (image) !, ILL!, K!, L!, MEXU!, MO!, MP!, NY!, P !, PH!, UC!, UCSB (feagment) !, VT !).

Quercus reticulata Bonpl. var. crassifolia Oerst., Chênes Amér. Trop. 29, pl. 34 (10–16) (1869). Type:— MEXICO, Puebla: F. M. Liebmann 3548 (p.p. as to Cupulif. Lbm. 151) (Lectotype (designated here): C 10012458!). Trelease (1924, p. 219, pl. 110a) wrote “The types of Q. reticulata crassifolia (Mexico, Liebmann, 151).” The plate shows mostly Liebmann 3548 (Cupulif. Lbm. 151), plus a small part of Liebmann 3548 (Cuplulif. Lbm. 155) mounted on the same sheet, which were given different barcode numbers at C and were collected at different dates although from the same locality. Because Trelease wrote types rather than type, even though he mentioned Cupulif. Lbm. 151, he did not effectively lectotypify specimen Cupulif. Lbm. 151 which we are now lectotypfying. Because Liebmann 3548 (Cupulif. Lbm. 155) was collected on a different date, it cannot be considered an isolectotype.

Quercus reticulata var. greggii A.DC., Prodr. 16(2.1): 34 (1864). Type:— MEXICO, Coahuila: J. Gregg 380 (Holotype: G!; isotypes: GH!, MO!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Quercus revoluta Trel. f. dysophyllopsis Trel., Mem. Natl.Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 79, pl. 112 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Hidalgo: J. Berlandier 411 (Holotype: G00087110 !; isotypes: BM!, FI!, G!, P!, UCSB (fragment from G holotype)!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Distribution: Mexico (Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Hidalgo, Jalisco, México, Michoacán, Morelos, Nayarit,

Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Zacatecas). The occurrence of Q. greggii in Nayarit reported by Villaseñor (2016) needs to be confirmed.

Quercus grisea Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 171 (1854) View in CoL . Type:— U.S.A., Texas: C. Wright 665 (Holotype: K000832239 !; isotypes: G!, GH!, K!, MO!, NY!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!) .

Quercus deserticola Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 79, pl. 113 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Hidalgo: C. A. Purpus 1233 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): GH02003320 !; isolectotypes: GH!, MO!, NY!, UC!, VT!). Neither an isotype of Uhde 309, nor duplicates of any of the Uhde paratypes from B have been found. The lectotype is designated from among the other paratypes that are the same species ( Q. grisea View in CoL ) as the holotype photograph in Trelease (1924) pl. 113.

Quercus jaralensis Trel. f. berlandieri Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 86, pl. 134 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, San Luis Potosí: J. Berlandier 1285 (Holotype: GH00062249 !; isotype: UCSB (fragment probably from GH holotype)!).

Quercus santaclarensis C.H.Mull., Amer. Midl. Naturalist View in CoL 19(3): 583 (1938). Type:— MEXICO, Chihuahua: F. Shreve 7951 (Holotype: BH; isotypes: MICH!, UCSB (fragment from BH holotype)!, US!). An isotype in the protologue is also cited as being at the Desert Laboratory, Tucson , Arizona .

Quercus undulata Torr. var. grisea (Liebm.) Engelm., Trans. Acad. Sci. St. Louis View in CoL 3: 393 (1877).

Distribution: Mexico (Aguascalientes, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Ciudad de México, Coahuila, Colima, Durango,

Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, México , Michoacán, Morelos, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San

Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Zacatecas), U.S.A. (Arizona, New Mexico, Texas) .

Quercus hinckleyi C.H.Mull., Cont. Texas Res. Found., Bot. Stud. 1: 40, pl. 11 (1951). Type:— U.S.A., Texas: C. H. Muller & L. C. Hickley 8901 (Holotype: BH; isotypes: A!, BRIT (image)!, F!, LL (image)!, MO!, NY!, TEX (image)!, UC!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!) .

Distribution: Mexico (Chihuahua), U.S.A. (Texas).

Quercus hintonii E.F.Warb., Bull. Misc. Inform. Kew 1939 View in CoL (2): 91 (1939). Type:— MEXICO, México: G. B. Hinton 6359 (Holotype: K000575008 !; isotypes: A!, BM!, F!, G!, K!, NY!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Quercus ochroesthes E.F.Warb., Bull. Misc. Inform. Kew 1939 View in CoL (2): 94 (1939). Type:— MEXICO, México: G. B. Hinton 6576 (Lectotype (designated here): K000575014 !; isolectotypes: BM!, G!, GBH (image)!, K!, UCSB (fragment)!). There are two specimens at K, both of which are annotated by E.F.Warburg as “type.”

Distribution: Mexico (Guerrero, México, Michoacán).

Quercus hintoniorum Nixon & C.H.Mull., Brittonia View in CoL 45(2): 147, fig. 1 (1993). Type :— MEXICO, Coahuila: R. M. Straw & M . Forman 1361 (Holotype: US; isotype: CAS!) .

Distribution: Mexico (Coahuila).

Quercus hirtifolia L.M.Vázquez, S.Valencia & Nixon, Brittonia View in CoL 56(2): 137 (2004). Type:— MEXICO, Puebla: M.L.Vázquez 3069 (Holotype: MEXU (image)!; isotypes:BH, FCME).The specimen from Coahuila of C. B. Cowan 3566 at CAS! may possibly be a hybrid between Q. jonesii View in CoL and Q. hirtifolia View in CoL although there are no reported collections of Q. hirtifolia View in CoL from Coahuila.

Distribution: Mexico (Hidalgo, Puebla, Veracruz).

Quercus huicholensis R.A.McCauley, Phytotaxa 471(3): 249. (2020). Type:— MEXICO, Jalisco: J. D. Bacon & R. D. Spellenberg 1475 (Holotype: NMC (NMC-065317) (image)!; isotypes: CAS (not yet received), CIIDIR, COLO, DAV, IBUG).Although we have not seen any of the type specimens, based on the description, illustrations, and the paratypes that we have seen, Q. huicholensis is very close to Q. urbani . Additional study is needed to determine whether they are different species.

Distribution: Mexico (Durango, Jalisco).

Quercus humboldtii Bonpl., Pl. Aequinoct. 2: 155, pl. 130 (1809). Type :— COLOMBIA, Cundinamarca: A. Bonpland 2083 (Holotype: P00669716 !; isotype: P!) .

Erythrobalanus duqueana O.Schwarz, Notizbl. Bot. Gart. Berlin-Dahlem 13: 495 (1937). Type:— COLOMBIA, Caldas: J. M. Duque 567 (Holotype: at B destroyed). The only specimen cited by Schwarz (1937) was Duque 567, but no isotypes have been found. There is a collection of Duque 1136 apparently from the same area, Río Nima, and also with the same determination at both F! and US!. Erythrobalanus duqueana is certainly Q. humboldtii but we have chosen not to neotypify the name based on Duque 1136 because it is not a recognized species.

Erythrobalanus tolimensis (Bonpl.) O.Schwarz, Notibl. Bot. Gart. Berlin-Dahlem 13: 496. 1937.

Quercus almaguerensis Bonpl., Pl. Aequinoct. 2: 157, pl. 131 (1809). Type:— COLOMBIA, Cuaca: A. Bonpland s. n. (Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 269)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype. There is no doubt that Q. almaguerensis is Q. humboldtii , but no extant Bonpland collection has been found from Almaguer which is in Cauca Department, Colombia.

Quercus boyacensis Cuatrec., Notas Fl. Colombia 6: 37 (1944). Type:— COLOMBIA, Boyacá: J. Cuatrecasas & H. Garcia G. 9816 (Holotype: COL000000750 View Materials (image)!; isotypes: F!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!) .

Quercus colombiana Cuatrec., Notas Fl. Colombia 6: 37 (1944). Type:— COLOMBIA, Boyacá: E. Pérez A. & J. Cuatrecasas 8100 (Holotype: COL000000751 View Materials (image)!; isotypes: F!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!) .

Quercus humboldtii var. lehmanniana Hieron. ex Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 142, pl. 273b (1924). Type :— COLOMBIA, Antioquia: F. C. Lehmann 7453 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): K000648583 !) .

Quercus lindenii A.DC., Prodr. 16(2.1): 32 (1864). Type :— COLOMBIA, Tunja: J. Linden 1325 (Holotype: G00410065 !; isotypes: BM!, CGE!, G!, K!, P!, UCSB (fragment from G holotype)!, USCS (fragment)!).

Quercus tolimensis Bonpl., Pl. Aequinoct. 2: 153, pl. 129 (1809). Type:— COLOMBIA, Quindío: A. Bonpland 4165 (Holotype: P00669733 !; isotypes: P (as s.n.)!, UCSB (as s.n.) (fragment)!).

Distribution: Colombia, Panama.

Quercus hypoxantha Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 170, pl. 339b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Coahuila: C. G. Pringle 10227 (Holotype: GH00444446!; isotypes: ASU (image)!, CAS!, ENCB (image)!, LL (image)!, NY!, PH!, UC!, UCSB (fragment)!, UNM (image)!, US!, VT!, WIS!). Quercus hypoxantha forms a species complex in northern Mexico that has been studied by Nixon and Muller (1993). Several segregate species have been recognized. The complex could be treated in a broad sense as mostly a single species, but within this complex, Q. coahuilensis and Q. miquihuanensis are here treated as distinct.

Quercus errans Trel. f. graciliramis View in CoL . C.H.Mull., J. Arnold Arbor. 17(3): 169 (1936). Type:— MEXICO, Nuevo León: C. H. Muller & M. T. Muller 1273 (Lectotype (designated here): A00069935 !; isolectotypes: MEXU!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!). Muller (1936) designated two syntypes.

Distribution: Mexico (Chihuahua, Coahuila, Guanajuato, Nuevo León, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas,

Zacatecas). The occurrence of Q. hypoxantha in Guanajuato reported by Villaseñor (2016) needs to be confirmed.

Quercus iltisii L.M.González, Brittonia 55(1): 54, figs. 1, 3, 4 (2003). Type:— MEXICO, Jalisco: L. M. González V. et al. 4657 (Holotype: IBUG0160259 View Materials (image)!; isotypes: BH, CHAPA, ENCB, F (image)!, IEB, MEXU, MICH (image)!, NMC, NY (image)!, UC, US (image)!, WIS (image)!, ZEA).

Distribution: Mexico (Colima, Jalisco).

Quercus insignis M.Martens & Galeotti, Bull.Acad. Roy.Sci.Bruxelles View in CoL 10(1): 219 (1843). Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: H. Galeotti 125 (Lectotype: BR0000006912260 ! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 216, pl. 14); isolectotypes: G!, P!). H. Galeotti 123, 124, and 125 at BR are all syntypes, but Trelease (1924, p. 216) effectively lectotypified the name in the caption to his pl. 14.

Quercus davidsoniae Standl., Publ. Field Mus. Nat. Hist., Bot. Ser. View in CoL 22(1): 14 (1940). Type:— PANAMA, Chiriquí: M. E. Davidson 864 (Holotype: F!; isotypes: A!, MO!, US!) .

Quercus insignis subsp. oocarpa (Liebm.) A.E.Murray, Kalmia View in CoL 13: 26 (1983).

Quercus insignis var. oocarpa (Liebm.) A.E.Murray, Kalmia View in CoL 13: 26 (1983).

Quercus insignis var. strombocarpoides (Liebm.) Oerst., Chênes Amér. Trop. View in CoL 29, pl. H, pl. 28 (1869).

Quercus oocarpa Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 184 (1854) View in CoL . Type:— GUATEMALA: J. R. R. Warszewicz50 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): G00386111!; isolectotype: UCSB (fragment from G lectotype)!). Warszewicz 50a at B was both the holotype of Q. oocarpa View in CoL and a syntype of Q. warsewiczii .

Quercus schippii Standl., Publ. Carnegie Inst. Wash. View in CoL 461: 53 (1935). Type:— BELIZE, El Cayo: W. A. Schipp 1248 (Holotype: F (accn. 733679)!; isotypes: BM!, CAS!, G!, GH!, K!, LL (image)!, MICH!, MO!, NY!, S (image)!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Quercus seibertii C.H.Mull., U.S.D.A. Bur. Pl. Industr. Misc. Publ. View in CoL 477: 19, pl. 6, 7 (1942). Type:— PANAMA, Chiriquí: R. J. Seibert 225 (Holotype: A00055576 !; isotypes: K!, MO!, NY!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Quercus strombocarpa Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 176 (1854) View in CoL . Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: F. M. Liebmann 3563 (Lectotype (designated here): C 10012531!; isolectotypes: C!, CAS!, GH!, M!, UCSB (fragment from C lectotype)!). Trelease (1924, p. 216) in the caption for pl. 17 wrote “Type material (Mexico foliage, Liebmann, 174=3563: fruit, Liebmann, Nov., 1841).” The Liebmann 3563 Cupulif. Lbm. 174 sheet at C is sterile, but presumably the acorn and cup also shown on pl. 17 are stored separately. Because he called this sheet type material rather than the type, we are lectotypifying the name based on this collection.

Quercus tomentocaulis C.H.Mull., Madroño View in CoL 10(5): 130, pl. 9 (1950). Type:— HONDURAS, Morazán: L. O. Williams & A. Molina View in CoL 12756 (Holotype: BH; isotypes: EAP (image)!, F!, GH!, MEXU!, MO!, UC!, UCSB (fragment from BH holotype)!, US!) .

Quercus warscewiczii Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 187 (1854) . Type:— PANAMA, Veraguas: B. Seemann 1230 (Lectotype (designated here): K000575035 !; isolectotype: BM!). Trelease (1924, p.43) had effectively lectotypified the type of Q. warscewiczii as Warscewicz 50a at B (destroyed) but this was also his lectotype of Q. oocarpa View in CoL in the same publication, so we are relectotypifying the name based on a different syntype.

Quercus yunckeri Trel., Publ. Field Mus. Nat. Hist., Bot. Ser. View in CoL 17(4): 358 (1938). Type:— HONDURAS, Comayagua: T. G. Yuncker et al. 6180 (Holotype: ILL00007538 View Materials !; isotypes: F!, G!, GH!, K!, MO!, NY!, S (image)!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Distribution: Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico (Chiapas, Colima, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo,

Jalisco, México, Michoacán, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tabasco, Veracruz), Nicaragua, Panama. The occurrence of Q .

insignis in Guanajuato, Hidalgo, México, and Michoacán reported by Villaseñor (2016) needs to be confirmed .

Quercus intricata Trel., Contr. U.S. Natl. Herb. 23(2): 185 (1922). Nom. nov. for Q. microphylla Née var. crispata A. DC (1864) non Q. crispata Steven. (1857) .

Quercus deliquescens C.H.Mull., Phytologia View in CoL 42: 289 (1979). Type:— Mexico, Chihuahua: M. C. Johnston et al. 11388 (Holotype: TEX00370409 View Materials (image)!; isotype: UCSB (fragment)!).

Quercus derrumbaderoensis C.H.Mull., Amer. Midl. Naturalist View in CoL 27(2): 471 (1942). Nom. nov. for Q. reticulata f. pungens C.H.Mull. (1936) View in CoL non Q. pungens Liebm. (1854) View in CoL .

Quercus intricata f. erratica Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 85, pl. 128b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Coahuila: C. G. Pringle 2862 (Holotype: CAS474678 View Materials !; isotypes: A!, VT!). Trelease (1924) in the caption to plate 128b states that Pringle 2862 is the type of Q. intricata f. erratica View in CoL and that the image was photographed at St. Louis. The specimen of Pringle 2862 now at CAS was received as part of an exchange of duplicate type specimens with Harvard, and the GH specimen now at CAS was assumed at the time to be a duplicate isotype. However, the specimen now at CAS is the specimen in Trelease’s plate 128b, so it is the holotype of this form.

Quercus intricata f. ovata Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 85, pl. 128a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Coahuila: E. Palmer 746 (Holotype: MO-144164!; isotypes: GH!, NY!, UC!, UCSB (fragment from MO holotype)!, US!) .

Quercus microphylla Neé var. crispata A.DC., Prodr. 16(2.1): 36 (1864). Type:— MEXICO, Coahuila: J. Gregg 296 (Holotype: G00358136 !; isotypes: CAS!, GH!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Quercus reticulata Bonpl. f. pungens C.H.Mull., J. Arnold Arbor. View in CoL 17(3): 166 (1936). Type:— MEXICO, Nuevo León: C. H. Muller 2417 (Holotype: A00055634 !; isotypes: CAS!, MEXU!, MO!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Quercus revoluta Trel. f. acuta C.H.Mull., J. Arnold Arbor. View in CoL 17(3): 166 (1936). Type:— MEXICO, Nuevo León: C. H. Muller 2169 (Holotype: A00055628 !; isotypes: CAS!, MEXU!, MO!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Quercus supranitida C.H.Mull., Amer. Midl. Naturalist View in CoL 27(2): 479 (1942). Nom. nov. for Q. revoluta f. acuta C.H.Mull. (1936) View in CoL non Q. acuta Thunb. (1784) View in CoL .

Distribution: Mexico (Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas),

U.S.A. (Texas). The occurrence of Q. intricata in Oaxaca reported by Villaseñor (2016) needs to be confirmed.

Quercus invaginata Trel., Mem. Natl.Acad. Sci. 20: 87, pl. 137, 138a (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Coahuila: C. A. Purpus 5029 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): MO-144167!; isolectotypes: BM!, GH!, NY!, UC!, UCSB (fragment from MO lectotype)!, US!) .

Quercus invaginata f. purpusiana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 87, pl. 138b (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Coahuila: C. A. Purpus 5030 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): MO-144168!; isolectotypes: BM!, E!, F!, GH!, NY!, UC!, UCSB (fragment from MO lectotype)!, US!) .

Distribution: Mexico (Coahuila, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí).

Quercus jonesii Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 136, pl. 257b (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Jalisco: M. E. Jones 446 (Holotype: US00089543!; isotypes: RSA (image)!).

Quercus coccolobifolia Trel., Mem. Natl.Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 136, pl. 258 (1924).Type:— MEXICO, Guanajuato: A. Bonpland 4269 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): P00754118!; isolectotype UCSB (fragment from P lectotype)!). The type collection number is not the same as the syntypes for Q. reticulata View in CoL which are Bonpland s. n. but from the same locality. Trelease (1924, p. 136) was aware of the distinction and that Bonpland had used the specific epithet “cocolobaefolia” as an ined. name for what became the syntypes Q. reticulata View in CoL . Martínez (1966) was the first person to synonymize Q. coccolobifolia View in CoL under Q. jonesii View in CoL .

Quercus endlichiana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 141, pl. 267b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Durango: R. Endlich 6 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 267b)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype.

Quercus endlichiana f. minor C.H.Mull., J. Arnold Arbor. View in CoL 17(3): 169 (1936). Type :— MEXICO, Nuevo León: C. H. Muller & M. T . Muller 1157 (Holotype: A00069873 !; isotype: P!) .

Quercus endlichiana f. serrata C.H.Mull., J. Arnold Arbor. View in CoL 17(3): 170 (1936). Type :— MEXICO, Nuevo León: C. H. Muller & M. T . Muller 1330 A (Holotype: A00069871 !) .

Distribution: Mexico (Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit,

Nuevo León, Oaxaca, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora, Zacatecas). The occurrence of Q. jonesii in Oaxaca reported by Villaseñor (2016) needs to be confirmed.

Quercus kelloggii Newb., Pacif. Railr. Rep. 6(3): chapter 2, 28, 89, fig. 6 (1858). Nom. nov. at the specific level for Q. tinctoria Michx. var. californica . Newberry (1859, p. 28–29) cited Q. tinctoria var. californica as a synonym and indicated that he considered it to be neither Q. tinctoria nor Q. coccinea Münchh. although similar to both. He would also have been aware that Torrey (1857, p 138) thought that Q. tinctoria var. californica could be a new species when he wrote “it is probably a distinct species.” For these reasons we consider Q. kelloggii to be a nom. nov. for Q. tinctoria var. californica based on the same type (Bartholomew & Almeda 2022).

Quercus californica (Torrey) J.G.Cooper, Smithson. Rep. 1858: 261 . (1859). Nom. illeg. because Cooper cites Q. kelloggii Newb. (1857) as a synonym which is an older name.

Quercus sonomensis Benth. ex A.DC., Prodr. 60(2.1): 62 (1864). Type:— U.S.A., California: T. Hartweg 1966 (139) (Holotype: G00719751 (image)!; isotypes: GH (image)!, K (image)!, NY (image)!, P (image)!).

Quercus tinctoria W. Bartram var. californica Torr., Pacif. Railr. Rep. 4(5): 138. (1857). Type:— U.S.A., California: J. M. Bigelow s. n. (1854) (Lectotype: NY01470684 (image)! designated by Bartholomew & Almeda (2022, p. 28); isolectotype: GH (image)!). Torrey noted that “The greater part of the botanical collections made by D. J. M. Bigelow, in the Pacific Railroad Survey, under the charge of Captain Whipple, were submitted to me for examination in accordance with the instructions of the War Department.” Torrey also had available to him other collections which were in the Torrey Herbarium now at NY, including examples of the same oak made during the Wilkes Expedition of 1838–42, Frémont’s Expedition to California in 1845–47, and the Emory expeditions with a collection by C.C. Parry in 1850. It is clear that he relied on the collection localities of all these specimens when he wrote “It occurs throughout the valley of the Sacramento, and as far south as San Diego.” All of these NY specimens are syntypes including the collection J. M Bigelow made in the Napa Valley of California in 1854 which we are designating as the lectotype .

Distribution: Mexico (Baja California), U.S.A. (California, Oregon).

Quercus laceyi Small, Bull. Torrey Bot. View in CoL Club 28(6): 358 (1901). Type:— U.S.A., Texas: H. Lacey s. n. (Holotype: NY). Breedlove considered Q. laceyi View in CoL to be a synonym of Q. glaucoides View in CoL , but Nixon & Muller (1992) convincingly show that they are different species.

Hartweg 419 (Lectotype (designated here): K000512627!; isolectotypes: BM!, CAS!, CGE!, E!, G!, K!, NY!, OXF!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!). Liebmann cited syntypes of T. Hartweg 419 at B and K. Trelease (1924, p. 218, pl. 86b) effectively lectotypified the name based on Hartweg 419 at B. Because the B specimen was destroyed, we are re-lectotypifying the name based on the other syntype which is from the Hooker Herbarium at K and has a determination by Liebmann in his hand. Further study is needed regarding the relationship of Q. laeta View in CoL and Q. arizonica View in CoL . Breedlove believed that these two species might best be treated in a broad sense as a single species.

View in CoL is a later homonym, we are not lectotypifying the name, but see below where we lectotypify the name Q. transmontana var. obscura View in CoL based on the K specimen of Seemann 1971.

Quercus obscura Trel. non Seemen (1897) var. perpusilla Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 71, pl. 89a (1924). Type:— MEXICO: B. Seemann 1976 (Lectotype (designated here): K000512631 !; isolectotypes: BM!, E (as s.n.)!, GH!). Trelease (1924, p. 71) cited a single collection but indicated that it was at both GH and K. In his pl. 89b he showed an image of the K specimen, but he did not indicate that it was “the type” as was his usual practice.

Trelease (1924, p. 47) wrote “ Liebmann, 205, 3477, Jan., 1943, the type)” by which he effectively lectotypified the Cupulif. Lbm. 205 sheet at C of Liebmann 3477. On p. 216 in the caption to pl. 29 he again wrote “The type (Mexico, Liebmann, 3477)” although in pl. 29 he shows photos taken of the two syntypes at C, neither of which are the Cupulif. Lbm. 205 sheet, so the caption to pl. 29 cannot be considered effective lectotypification. The three s.n. collections at K are almost certainly syntypes of Q. excelsa View in CoL as they have the correct date and locality.

Collections cited by A. de Candolle (1864) correspond to Liebmann 3505, some of which were collected in Oct 1841 and some in Nov 1841, but all at the same locality of S. Bartholome. A. de Candolle cites specimens as “ Q. lancifolia Liebm. ! in h. Copenh. et DC., non Cham. et Schl.” Of the six specimens originally at C, one is now at CAS. All six specimens were determined in A. de Candolle’s hand as Q. leiophylla . A.de Candolle (1864) cites two Liebmann collections at C by locality, not collection number. His citation of “In monte Orizaba alt. 8000 p.” corresponds to Liebmann 3496, and his citation of “prov. Oaxaca da Pico de Pelado alt. 9000 p.” corresponds to Liebmann 3495. Collections of both numbers at C are annotated in A.de Candolle’s hand. The placement of this variety needs additional study, but we consider the type to fall within the variation found within Q. laurina as broadly interpreted.

Colima, Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, México, Michoacán, Morelos, Nayarit, Nuevo León ,

Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Zacatecas).

Quercus macdougallii Martínez,Anales Inst. Biol. Univ. Nac.Autón. México 34(1 & 2): 147 (1964). Type:— MEXICO, Oaxaca: T. B. MacDougall 503 (Holotype: MEXU00051895 View Materials !; isotypes: CAS!, GH!, ENCB (image)!, F!, MEXU!, MICH!, US!) .

Distribution: Mexico (Oaxaca).

Quercus magnoliifolia Neé, Anales Ci. Nat. View in CoL 3: 268 (1801). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: L. Neé s. n. (1791) (Lectotype: MA23387 ! designated by Bartholomew & Almeda (2022, p. 29); isolectotype: MA!) .

Quercus chartacea Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 61, pl. 59a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Oaxaca: C. Seler & E. G. Seler 1631 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): NY01450026 !; isolectotype: GH!). The holotype was E. G. Seler 62, but no isotypes have been found. The lectotype is selected from the paratypes.

Quercus circinata Neé, Anales Ci. Nat. View in CoL 3: 272 (1801). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: L. Neé s.n. (1791) (Lectotype: MA26472 ! designated by Muller & McVaugh (1972, p. 518); isolectotype: MA!) .

Quercus erubescens Trel., Repert. View in CoL Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 33: 315 (1934). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: L. Schultze 341 (Holotype: at B destroyed). The determination of Q. erubescens View in CoL as probably Q. magnoliifolia View in CoL is based on the Trelease (1934) description as no images or original specimens exist.

Quercus haematophlebia Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 66, pl. 74 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Nayarit: J. N. Rose 3363 (Holotype: US 00089527!) .

Quercus liebmannii Oerst. ex Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 66, pl. 75a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Oaxaca: F. M. Liebmann 3505 (Lectotype (designated here): C10012498 !; isolectotypes: C!, CAS!). Trelease (1924) on p. 67 wrote “ Liebmann, 89, 3505, 5742, May 1842, the type”, and on p. 67 in the caption to pl. 75a he wrote “The type (Mexico, Liebmann, 89=5742).” The specimen photographed in pl. 75a is, however, Liebmann 3505 not 5742. In fact, no specimen numbered 5742 has been found at C. Because of this ambiguity we are designating Liebmann 3505 at C as the lectotype. The placement of this species needs additional study, but we consider the type to fall within the variation found within Q. magnoliifolia View in CoL as broadly interpreted.

Quercus lutea Neé, Anales Ci. Nat. View in CoL 3: 269 (1801). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: L. Neé s. n. (1791) (Lectotype: MA233384 View Materials ! designated by Bartholomew & Almeda (2022, p. 29); isolectotype: MA!) .

Quercus poculifer Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 64, pl. 69 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Oaxaca: C. G. Pringle 4760 (Holotype: MO-144177!; isotypes: A!, BM!, BR!, CAS!, E!, ENCB (image)!, F!, G!, GH!, HBG (image)!, K!, KFTA (image)!, MEXU!, NDG (image)!, NY!, P!, PH!, UC!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!, VT!). The placement of this species needs additional study, but we consider the type to fall within the variation found within Q. magnoliifolia View in CoL as broadly interpreted.

Quercus rubescens Trel., Repert. View in CoL Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 33: 316 (1934). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: L. Schultze 328 (Holotype: at B destroyed). The determination of Q. rubescens View in CoL as Q. magnoliifolia View in CoL is based on the Trelease (1934) description as no images or original specimens exist.

Quercus tepicana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 135, pl. 355 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Nayarit: J. N. Rose s. n. (3 Aug 1897) (Holotype: US 00089679!) .

Distribution: Mexico (Aguascalientes, Baja California Sur, Chiapas, Ciudad de México, Coahuila, Colima, Durango,

Potosí, Sinaloa, Veracruz, Zacatecas).

Quercus mcvaughii Spellenb.,Amer. J. Bot. View in CoL 79(10): 1200, fig. 1 (1992). Type :— MEXICO, Chihuahua: R. D. Spellenberg et al. 9821 (Holotype: NMC (accn. 059633) (image)!; isotypes: ASU (image)!, CAS!, CIIDIR (image)!, IBUG (image)!, MEXU!, NY!, MO!, US!, K!). This species is very close to Q. crassifolia View in CoL and could be treated at the infraspecific level.

Distribution: Mexico (Chihuahua, Durango, Jalisco, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora).

Quercus meavei View in CoL Valencia-A., Sabas & O. J.Soto, Phytotaxa 269(2): 121 (2016). Type:— MEXICO, Hidalgo: Valencia & Flores 5286b (Holotype: FCME; isotypes: HUMO, HGMO, HUAP). The holotype has not been seen. Some of the paratypes that have been seen are Q. xalapensis View in CoL , but based on the protologue and illustrations, the type collection seems to represent a distinct species .

Distribution: Mexico (Hidalgo).

Quercus melissae Nixon & Barrie, Novon View in CoL 25(4): 447, fig. 3 (2017). Type:— MEXICO, Chiapas: L. Kaplan & E. L. Davis 358 (p.p.) (Holotype: F!; isotypes: A!, F!, G!). There are also collections of Kaplan & Davis 358 at F which are Q. acutifolia View in CoL so they are not isotypes. This species is close to Q. segoviensis View in CoL , and additional study is needed to determine if it is distinct.

Distribution: Guatemala, Mexico (Chiapas).

Quercus mexicana Bonpl., Pl.Aequinoct. 2: 35, pl. 82 (1809). Type:— MEXICO, Hidalgo: A. Bonpland 4060 (Holotype: P00129716 !; isotypes: CGE (as s.n.)!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Palmer 70 (Lectotype (designated here): A00969951 !; isolectotypes: BM!, F!, GH!, MEXU!, MO!, NY!, UC!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!). Trelease (1924, p. 182) cites two specimens without designating a type. The specimen at A has a determination in Trelease’s hand.

Distribution: Mexico (Chiapas, Ciudad de México, Coahuila, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Jalisco, México, Michoacán,

Morelos, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Veracruz).

The occurrence of Q. mexicana in Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Sinaloa reported by Villaseñor (2016) needs to be confirmed. The reports from Nayarit may possibly involve introgression with some other species.

Quercus microphylla Neé, Anales Ci. Nat. View in CoL 3: 264 (1801). Type:— MEXICO, Guanajuato: L. Neé s. n. (1791) (Lectotype: MA26469! designated by Muller & McVaugh (1972, p. 519); isolectotypes: MA!, UCSB (fragment)!). Although there are differences between Q. microphylla View in CoL , Q. cordifolia View in CoL , and Q. striatula View in CoL , they all form a broadly defined species. Further study would be important for this group.

Quercus cordifolia Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 84, pl. 125b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Coahuila: E. Palmer 1278 (Holotype: GH00055707 !; isotypes: AC!, K!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!) .

Lectotype (designated here): GH00969979 !; isolectotypes: K!, US!). No isotypes of the original type, Endlich 3 (p.p.), have been found. The lectotype is selected from the paratypes.

Quercus striatula f. otinapensis Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 94, pl. 152a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Durango: E. Palmer 445 (Holotype: GH00055599 !; isotype: US!) .

Distribution: Mexico (Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Ciudad de México, Coahuila, Durango, Guanajuato, Hidalgo,

Jalisco, México, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala ,

Veracruz, Zacatecas).

Quercus miquihuanensis Nixon & C.H.Mull., Brittonia View in CoL 45(2): 152, fig. 3 (1993). Type:— MEXICO, Tamaulipas: K. C. Nixon et al. 4051-I (Holotype: BH (image)!). This species is part of the Q. hypoxantha View in CoL complex of northeastern Mexico, but Q. miquihuanensis View in CoL is sufficiently distinct to be treated here as a separate species.

Distributon: Mexico (Nuevo León, Tamaulipas) .

Quercus mohriana Buckley ex Rydb., Bull. New York Bot. Gard. 2(6): 219, pl. 31, figs. 1, 2 (1901). Type:— U.S.A., Texas: S. B. Buckley s. n. (1875) (Lectotype: NY00248752! designated by Trelease (1924 p. 220, pl. 153b) and redundantly relectotypificed by Dorr & Nixon (1985, p. 218); isolectotype: NY!). The distinction between Q. mohriana and Q. tinkhamii needs additional study. If Q. tinkhamii is included as a synonym, the distribution of Q. mohriana becomes much broader in Mexico.

Distribution: Mexico (Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León), U.S.A. (New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas).

Quercus muehlenbergii Engelm., Trans. Acad. Sci. St. Louis View in CoL 3: 391 (1877). Type:— U.S.A.: F. T. Pursh s. n. (1806) (Holotype: PH 00038773 (image)!).

Quercus panduriformis Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 62, pl. 62b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Colima: H. Ross 519 (Lectotype (designated here): M-0244466!). Trelease (1924, p. 63) cites Endlich 1357 as the type of Q. panduriformis which was undoubtedly at B and destroyed, but in the caption to pl. 62b he also cites Ross 579 at M as the type. No specimen of Ross 579 was found at M, but there is a specimen of Ross 519 which is the specimen photographed in pl. 62b. Trelease misread the “1” as a “7” which is an easy mistake to make. We have determined the M specimen of Ross 519 to be Q. obtusata . Note that Trelease (1924, p. 62) in the specimens examined statement for Q. obtusata does cite “? Ross, 519 ” indicating that he was uncertain, at least at one time, if Ross 519 was actually Q. obtusata , but he decided that it belonged to his new species Q. panduriformis . Because two different collections were cited by Trelease as the type of Q. panduriformis , one of which is now lost, as well as a typographic error in citing the extant specimen, we are designating Ross 519 as the lectotype of Q. panduriformis .

Quercus panduriformis f. rubrinervis Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 63 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: E. Langlassé 600 (Lectotype (designated here): US00089600!; isolectotypes: G!, GH!, K!, MPU!, P!). Trelease (1924, p. 63) cites two Langlassé collections without designating one as the type.

Quercus reticulata Bonpl. subsp. rhodophlebia (Trel.) A.Camus f. crenata (Trel.) A.Camus, Chênes Texte View in CoL 2: 581 (1939).

Quercus rhodophlebia Trel. f. crenata Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 74 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Michoacán: G. Arsène 6018 (Lectotype (designated here): ILL00007616 View Materials !; isolectotypes: A!, CAS!, MO!, MPU!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!). Trelease (1924, p. 74) cited two different Arsène collections without indicating where they were deposited.

Quercus lutescens M.Martens&Galeotti,Bull.Acad.Roy.Sci.Bruxelles View in CoL 10(1): 219(1843). Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: H. Galeotti 91 (Lectotype: BR0000006915636 ! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 222, pl. 194); isolectotypes: BR!, G!, K!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!). Although M. Martens & Galeotti (1843) cited only one collection number, there are two sheets of this number at BR marked as types, one of which was designated by Trelease as “The type.”

Quercus oleoides var. australis Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 114, pl. 192b, 193 (1924). Type:— COSTA RICA, Heredia: H. Pittier 2607 (Holotype: BR0000006911669 !; isotypes: US!, UCSB (fragment from BR holotype)!, UCSB (fragment)!).
