Quercus tomentella Engelm., Trans. Acad. Sci. St. Louis View in CoL View at ENA 3: 393 (1877). Type:— MEXICO, Baja California: E. Palmer

89 ( Lectotype: MO-143905! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 223, pl. 212a); isolectotypes: GH!, K!, MO!, PH!,

UCSB (fragment from MO lectotype)!, UCSB (fragment)!). Quercus chrysolepis Liebm. subsp. tomentella (Engelm.) A.E.Murray, Kalmia View in CoL 13: 25 (1983). Quercus chrysolepis var. tomentella (Engelm.) A.E.Murray, Kalmia View in CoL 13: 25 (1983). Distribution: Mexico (Baja California), U.S.A. (California).

Quercus toumeyi Sarg., Gard. & Forest 8: 92, fig. 13, 14 (1895). Type:— U.S.A., Arizona: J. W. Toumey s. n. (23 Jul 1894) (Holotype: A00034108 !; isotypes: K!, UCSB (fragment from A holotype)!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!) .

Quercus barrancana Spellenb., Phytoneuron 2014 -105:fig.1–8 (2014). Type :— MEXICO, Chihuahua: R. D. Spellenberg & W. Anderson 13487 (Holotype: NY (image)!; isotype: TEX (image)!). There is an image of the holotype in Spellenberg (2014), but as of this writing, NY has not received the holotype .

Quercus chuhuichupensis C.H.Mull., Amer. Midl. Naturalist View in CoL 19(3): 584 (1938). Type:— MEXICO, Chihuahua: H. LeSueur 525 (Holotype: BH; isotype: TEX!, UCSB (fragment from BH holotype)!).

Quercus hartmanii Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 95, pl. 154a (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Chihuahua: C. V. Hartman 633 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): GH00069942 !; isolectotypes: A!, K!) .

Distribution: Mexico (Chihuahua, Durango, Nuevo León, Sinaloa, Sonora), U.S.A. (Arizona, New Mexico, Texas).

Quercus toxicodendrifolia Trel., Mem. Natl.Acad. Sci. 20: 48, pl. 33a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Hidalgo: J. Berlandier 533 (p.p.) (Holotype at W destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): G00358149 !; isolectotypes: BM?!, P?!, UCSB? (fragment)!). The holotype of Q. toxicodendrifolia was collected on 21 May 1827 and is cited by Trelease (1924, p. 48). Collections of Berlandier 533 made on 19 May 1827 cannot be considered type specimens although G has a specimen from each of these dates. The G specimen of Berlandier 533 dated 21 May 1827 is the one here designated the lectotype. In the case of Berlandier 533 at BM which is undated, it can only be considered to be a possible isotype and now becomes a possible isolectotype. In the case of the P specimen there is a date of 21 May 1827 on the label but no number. Because Berlandier made collections of the same oak species using number 429 on this date, the P specimen can also only be considered a possible isolectotype. In the case of the fragments at UCSB, one of the Berlandier 533 fragments is dated 19 May 1827, so it is not a type collection. Another Berlandier 533 fragment is undated so it could be a possible lectotype fragment, but the leaf size is much larger than those of the lectotype and is probably from the G collection of 19 May, so it is not a lectotype fragment.

Distribution: Mexico (Hidalgo, Puebla, Veracruz).

Quercus trinitatis Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 144, pl. 277b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Hidalgo: C. G. Pringle 8888 (Holotype: BP; isotypes: A!, BM!, C!, CAS!, E!, ENCB (image)!, G!, GH!, HBG (image)!, ILL!, K!, MEXU!, MICH!, MO!, NY!, P!, PH!, S (image)!, UC!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!, VT!). This species is close to Q. perseifolia , and additional study is needed to determine if it is distinct.

Distribution: Mexico (Hidalgo).

Quercus tuberculata Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 181 (1854) View in CoL . Type :— MEXICO: B. Seemann 1970 (Holotype: K000512609 !; isotypes: BM!, GH (as s.n.), K!). There are two specimens of Seemann 1970 in the Hooker Herbarium at K, but only one of them has a determination in Liebmann’s hand which is the one we consider to be the holotype.

Quercus aurantiaca Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 57, pl. 53a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Chihuahua: R. Endlich 770 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 53a)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype.

Quercus edwardsiae C.H.Mull.,Amer.Midl.Naturalist View in CoL 27(2):472(1942). Type:— MEXICO, Nuevo León: M. T. Edwards 435 (Holotype: BH; isotypes: DS!, UCSB (fragment from BH holotype)!).

Quercus idonea Goldman, Contr. U.S. Natl. Herb. View in CoL 16: 321 (1916). Type :— MEXICO, Baja California Sur: E. W. Nelson & E. A . Goldman 7423 (Holotype: US 00089553!; isotype: A!) .

Quercus monterreyensis Trel. & C.H.Mull., Bull. Torrey Bot. View in CoL Club 63(3): 151 (1936). Type:— MEXICO, Nuevo León: C. H. Muller & M. T. Muller 596 (p.p.) (Holotype: ILL00007499 View Materials !; isotypes: MEXU!, TEX (image)!, UCSB (fragment)!). The specimen of C. H. Muller & M. T. Muller 596 at A is Q. oblongata View in CoL , so it is not an isotype.

Quercus standleyi Trel., Contr. U.S. Natl. Herb. View in CoL 23(2): 181 (1922). Type:— MEXICO, Sonora: J. N. Rose et al. 12789 (Holotype: US 00089652!; isotypes: NY!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!) .

Quercus tuberculata f. latifolia Martínez, Anales Inst. Biol. Univ. Nac. Autón. México 25(1 & 2): 45, fig. 6 (1954). Type :— MEXICO, Durango: H. S. Gentry 5226 (Holotype: MEXU00010646 View Materials !; isotypes: DS!, GH!, MEXU!, MO!, NY!, UC!, VT!).

Distribution: Mexico (Jalisco).

Quercus turbinella Greene, Ill. W. Amer. Oaks View in CoL 1: 37 (1889). Type:— MEXICO, Baja California: G. W. Dunn s. n. (25 Sep 1888) (Holotype: NDG13622 View Materials !; isotypes: NY!, UCSB (fragment)!). There is no date on the Dunn s. n. sheet at NDG, but it was the specimen from which the illustration was prepared for the protologue. The isotypes at NY and US give the collection date as 25 Sep 1888. All the other specimens at NDG were collected too late to be considered syntypes as the species was published on 1 May 1889 and the Greene s. n. collections of Q. turbinella View in CoL at NDG were made later in 1889.

Quercus dumosa Nutt. subsp. turbinella (Greene) A.E.Murray, Kalmia View in CoL 13: 25 (1983).

Muller 639 (Lectotype (designated here): ILL00007461 View Materials !; isolectotypes: A!, ILL!, K!, MO!, NY!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!, WIS!). Neither of the two specimens at ILL were marked as types.

Quercus endemica C.H.Mull., Amer. Midl. Naturalist View in CoL 18(5): 846 (1937). Type:— MEXICO, Coahuila: F. L. Wynd & C. H. Muller 638 (Lectotype (designated here): ILL00007498 View Materials !; isolectotypes: A!, ILL!, K!, MEXU!, MO!, NY!, UCSB (fragment)!). The two specimens at ILL were both marked as types.

Quercus fendleri Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 170 (1854) View in CoL . Type :— U.S.A., New Mexio: A. Fendler 805 (Lectotype: K000832235 ! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 221, pl. 159); isolectotypes: BM!, GH!, MO!, NY!, PH!, UCSB (fragment from K holotype)!, WIS!).

Quercus greggii (A.DC.) Trel. f. subglabrata C.H.Mull., J. Arnold Arbor. 25(4): 440 (1944). Type :— MEXICO, Coahuila: C. H. Muller 3238 (Holotype: GH00055662 !; isotype: UC!) .

Quercus rydbergiana Cockerell, Torreya View in CoL 3(1): 7 (1903). Type :— U.S.A., New Mexico: T. D. A. Cockerell s. n. (1902) (Holotype: NY00248767 !) .

Distribution: Mexico (Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas), U.S.A. (Colorado, New

Mexico, Texas).

Quercus urbani Trel., Proc. Amer. Philos. Soc. View in CoL 60: 32, pl. 2 (1921). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: E. Langlassé 1066 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): GH00055682 !; isolectotypes: G!, K!, MPU!, P!, US!).

Quercus pennivenia Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 135, pl. 256a (1924). Type:— MEXICO: B. Seemann 1998 (Holotype: K000512911!). There is apparently a typographic error in Trelease (1924, p. 224) in the caption to pl. 256. The holotype of Q. pennivenia View in CoL is Seemann 1998 not 1978. Both Seemann 1968 and 1998 cited on p. 135 are Q. urbani View in CoL whereas Seemann 1978 is Q. durifolia View in CoL . The placement of this species needs additional study, but we consider the type to fall within the variation found within Q. urbani View in CoL as broadly interpreted.

Distribution: Mexico (Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Jalisco, México, Michoacán, Nayarit,

Oaxaca, Querétaro, Sinaloa, Sonora, Zacatecas).

Quercus uxoris McVaugh, Contr. Univ. Michigan Herb. 9(7): 513 (1972). Type:— MEXICO, Jalisco: R. McVaugh 20292 (Holotype: MICH1109370 View Materials !; isotypes: CAS!, G!, K!, LL (image)!, MO!, NY!, TEX (image)!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!) .

Distribution: Mexico (Aguascalientes, Colima, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, Oaxaca). The occurrence of Q. uxoris in Augscalientes reported by Villaseñor (2016) needs to be confirmed.

Quercus vicentensis Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 59 (1924). Type:— EL SALVADOR, San Vicente: P.C. Standley 21593 (Holotype: US00089688!; isotype: GH!). Breedlove considered some of the Mexican collections of this species from the states of Guerrero Jalisco, México, Michoacán, and Oaxaca to be a new species, but we have determined that the purported distinctions are variable and do not justify the recognition of a segregate species.

Quercus centenaria L.M.González, Ibugana 9: 49, fig. 1–4 (2018). Type:— MEXICO, Jalisco: L.M.González V. & L.M.Villarreal de Puga 4817 (Holotype: IBUG0174119; isotype: IBUG). Breedlove considered collections of this to be a new species and was planning to publish it. Although we have not seen the type of Q. centenaria , we have seen many of the paratypes as well as additional specimens collected by Breedlove, and disagree with both Breedlove and González V. We consider Q. centenaria to not be sufficiently distinct from Q. vicentensis View in CoL .

Quercus martinezii C.H.Mull., Anales Inst. Biol. Univ. Nac. Autón. México 24(2): 274, fig. 1 (1953[1954]). Type :— MEXICO, Jalisco: R. McVaugh 13912 (Holotype: BH; isotypes: K!, MEXU!, MICH!, UCSB (fragment from BH holotype)!, US!). The placement of this species needs additional study, but we consider the type to fall within the variation found within Q. vicentenis as broadly interpreted.

Quercus obscurirhachis Trel., Repert. View in CoL Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 33: 315 (1934). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: L. Schultze 345 (Holotype: at B destroyed). The determination of Q. obscurirhachis View in CoL as probably Q. vicentensis View in CoL is based on the Trelease (1934) description as no images or original specimens exist.

Quercus siltepecana Matuda, Bol. Soc. Bot. View in CoL México 18: 3 (1955). Type :— MEXICO, Chiapas: E. Matuda 19652 (Holotype: MEXU00085229 View Materials !) .

Distribution: El Salvador, Mexico (Chiapas, Colima, Guerrero, Jalisco, México, Michoacán, Nayarit, Oaxaca).

Quercus wislizeni A.DC., Prodr. 16(2.1): 67 (1864). Type:— U.S.A., California: F. A. Wislizenus s. n. (Nov 1851) (Holotype: MO-204635 (image)!) . The holotype of Q. wislizeni was collected in November 1851 at the American Fork of the Sacramento River near Auburn. It was collected by Friedrich Adolph Wislizenus (1810–1889) and sent to A. de Candolle by G. Engelmann. W. Trelease , C. H. Muller , and K. C. Nixon all considered the MO specimen to be the holotype, and the specimen has label information in A. de Candolle’s hand. There is an inconsistency with the A. de Candolle publication which gives the collection locality as being from Chihuahua in the mountains of western Mexico in the vicinity of “Cosiquiriachi” (which is likely Cusihuiriachi) at an elevation of 7000 ft. Trelease (1924, p. 205) considered that A. de Candolle had erroneously ascribed that type to the Mexican state of Chihuahua . Certainly , the MO specimen is the species that occurs in California and only ranges into the Mexican state of Baja California .

Distribution: Mexico (Baja California), U.S.A. (California).

Quercus xalapensis Bonpl., Pl. Aequinoct. 2: 24, pl. 75 (1809). Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: A. Bonpland 4467 (Holotype: P00129754 ! (as s.n.); isotypes: B-W!, P!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!). The holotype at P (s.n.) has a description on it in Bonpland’s hand. The other two specimens at P (s.n) as well as those with the number 4467 at P and elsewhere are all considered to be isotypes.

Quercus acutifolia Neé var. angustifolia A.DC., Prodr. 16(2.1): 66 (1864). Type :— GUATEMALA: J. R. R. Warszewicz 6 (Lectotype (designated here): G00410062 !). A. de Candolle designated two syntypes.

Quercus grandis Liebm., Overs.Kongel.Danske Vidensk.Selsk.Forh.Medlemmers Arbeider1854:183 (1854) View in CoL . Type :— GUATEMALA: J. R. R. Warszewicz 20 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): K000512973 !; isolectotypes: G!, P!) .

Quercus grandis var. tenuipes Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 185, pl. 373a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Puebla: H. Galeotti 135 (Holotype: G!; isotypes: P!, UCSB (fragment from G holotype)!).

Quercus monserratensis C.H.Mull., U.S.D.A. Bur. Pl. Industr. Misc. Publ. View in CoL 477: 71, pl. 104 (1942). Type:— MEXICO, Chiapas: C. A. Purpus 10091 (p.p.) (Holotype: A00055674!; isotype: UCSB (fragment from A holotype)!). Only the specimens of Purpus 10091 made in Apr 1927 are type collections of Q. monserratensis View in CoL which is a synonym of Q. xalapensis View in CoL . Purpus had used this same collection number two years earlier in May 1925 and at approximately the same locality. The 1925 collections are Q. segoviensis View in CoL rather than Q. xalapensis View in CoL and are not types.

Quercus salvadorensis Trel., Publ. Field Mus. Nat. Hist., Bot. Ser. View in CoL 8(1): 5 (1930). Type:— EL SALVADOR, Cuscatlán: S. Calderon 1981 (Holotype: US00089634!; isotypes: GH!, ILL!, NY!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Quercus xalapensis f. jalapae Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 193, pl. 393a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: C. J. W. Schiede 18 (p.p.) (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): HAL0060347!; isolectotypes: HBG (image)!, MO!, UCSB (fragment)!). Only the collections of Schiede 18 (p.p.) from Jalapa are Q. xalapensis f. jalapa e. The sheets of Schiede 18 (p.p.) at G, and one of the two sheets at HAL are from Jalcingo and are the lectotype and an isolectotype of Q. affinis f. commutata View in CoL .

Distribution: El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico (Chiapas, Chihuahua, Colima, Durango, Guerrero, Hidalgo,

Jalisco, México, Michoacán, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora ,

Tamaulipas, Veracruz), Nicaragua. The occurrence of Q. xalapensis in Chihuahua, Colima, Durango, Nayarit, Sinaloa,

and Sonora reported by Villaseñor (2016) needs to be confirmed and may involve differences in the interpretation of what should be included in this species.

Quercus xylina Scheidw., Hort. Belge View in CoL 4: 321, pl. 18 (1837). Type:— MEXICO, Jalisco: H. Galeotti 119 (Lectotype (designated here): BR0000006915674 !; isolectotype: UCSB (fragment from BR holotype)!). The date of 1840 on Galeotti collections is not the actual collection date but rather the date the numbers were assigned back in Europe (McVaugh 1978). The actual collection date for what was assigned the number 119 in 1840 was probably 1836. Scheidweiler (1837) did not cite the exact specimen on which he was basing Q. xylina View in CoL .

Quercus jaliscensis Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 86, pl. 132 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Zacatecas: J. N. Rose 2685 (Holotype: US00089544!; isotypes: NY!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Quercus laxa Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 181 (1854) View in CoL . Type:— MEXICO, Sinaloa: B. Seemann 1967 (Holotype: K000512629 !; isotypes: BM!, C (as s.n.)!, GH (as s.n.)!, UCSB (as s.n.) (fragment)!).

Quercus reticulata Bonpl. var. laxa (Liebm.) Wenz., Jahrb. K View in CoL ̂nigl. Bot. Gart. Berlin 3: 195 (1884).

Distribution: Mexico (Ciudad de México, Colima, Durango, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Jalisco, México, Michoacán,

Nayarit, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Zacatecas).
