Quercus elliptica Neé var. microcarpa (Liebm.) A.DC., Prodr. View in CoL 16(2.1): 71 (1864).

Quercus microcarpa Liebm. View in CoL non Lapeyr. (1813), Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 184 (1854). See Q. parviglans View in CoL below.

Quercus parviglans Trel., Proc.Amer.Philos. Soc. View in CoL 54: 8 (1915). Type :— GUATEMALA: J. R . R. Warszewicz 8 (Lectotype (designated here): G!; isolectotype: UCSB (fragment from G lectotype)!). Nom. nov. for Q. microcarpa Liebm. (1854) View in CoL non Lapeyr. (1813). Trelease (1924, p. 225, pl. 298a, pl. 298b) indicated that types are at B and G .

Quercus parviglans f. polycarpa Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 152, pl. 299a (1924). Type:— GUATEMALA, Baja Verapaz: O. F. Cook 291 (Holotype: US 00089597!) .

Quercus parviglans f. tejadana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 152 (1924). Type:— GUATEMALA, Sacatepequez: R.Tejada 209 (Holotype: US 00089596!) .

Quercus perseifolia Liebm. var. achoteana Trel., Publ. Field Mus. Nat. Hist., Bot. Ser. View in CoL 17(4): 357 (1938). Type:— HONDURAS, Comayagua: T. G. Yuncker et al. 6203 (Holotype: ILL00007608 View Materials !; isotypes: F!, G!, GH!, K!, MO!, NY!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!) .

Quercus siguatepequeana Trel., J. Arnold Arbor. View in CoL 11(1): 25 (1930). Type:— HONDURAS, Comayagua: P. C. Standley 56393 (Holotype: F (accn. 581663)!; isotypes: A!, G!, ILL!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!) .

Quercus totutlensis A.DC., Prodr. View in CoL 16(2.1): 62 (1864). Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: F. M. Liebmann 3568 (Lectotype: CAS0004231 View Materials ! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 225, pl. 297b); isolectotypes: C!, GH!, K (as s.n.)!, P (as s.n.)!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Distribution: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico (Chiapas, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Oaxaca,

Puebla, San Luis Potosí, Tabasco, Veracruz), Nicaragua.

Quercus sarahmariae Nixon & Barrie, Novon View in CoL 25(4): 446, fig. 2 (2017). Type:— COSTA RICA, Puntarenas: G. Davidse 24503 (Holotype: MO-138404!; isotypes: CAS!, CR). This species needs to be compared with Q. benthamii View in CoL of which it may be a synonym.

Distribution: Costa Rica.

Quercus sartorii Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 177 (1854) View in CoL . Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: F. M. Liebmann 3554 (Lectotype: C10013683 ! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 228, pl. 381a); isolectotypes: C!, CAS!, F (as s.n.)!, GH!, K (as s.n.)!, MEL? (as s.n., s.d.) (image)!, MO!, NY!, UCSB (fragment from C lectotype)!, UCSB (fragment)!, US (as s.d.)!). The lectotype is sheet Cupulif. Liebm. 14 of Liebmann 3554.

Quercus ghiesbreghtii M.Martens & Galeotti, Bull. Acad. Roy. Sci. Bruxelles View in CoL 10(1): 212 (1843). Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: H. Galeotti 128 (Lectotype: BR0000006913557 ! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 226, pl. 322b); isolectotypes: BR!, G!, L!, LE!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!). M. Martens & Galeotti cite only one collection number, two sheets of which are at BR marked as types; one was designated by Trelease as “The type.” The placement of this species needs additional study, but we consider the type to fall within the variation found within Q. sartorii View in CoL as broadly interpreted.

Quercus sartorii f. magma Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 189 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: F. M. Liebmann 3552 (Holotype: C 10012525!; isotypes: BM!, C!, CAS!, MO!, NY!, UCSB (fragment from C holotype)!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!). Although Trelease (1924, p. 189) did not specify where the holotype was deposited, by citing “ Liebmann, 12, 3552 ” he actually designated a specific sheet. The 12 refers to a Cubulif. Lbm. number which is different for each sheet, and Liebm. Cupulif. 12 is a C.

Quercus vexans Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 190, pl. 386 (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Veracruz: C. A. Purpus s. n. (Dec 1914) (Lectotype (designated here): ILL00007550 View Materials !; isolectotypes: ILL!, UC (as 7468)). The UC specimen numbered 7468 is undoubtedly a type collection as it has the correct date, locality, and identity, although none of the seven sheets at ILL have a collection number. The label on the UC specimen is in Purpus’ hand including the phrase “part of Type.” Purpus apparently sent most of the specimens from this set to Trelease for determination who kept them. Evidently , the only specimen that has the collection number on the label is the sheet at UC .

Distribution: Mexico (Chiapas, Coahuila, Guerrero, Hidalgo, México, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San

Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, Veracruz). The occurrence of Q. sartorii in Guerrero and México reported by Villaseñor

(2016) needs to be confirmed.

Quercus scytophylla Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 180 (1854) View in CoL . Type:— MEXICO, Oaxaca: F. M. Liebmann 3557 (Lectotype (designated here): C 10012528!; isolectotypes: CAS!, G!, UCSB (fragment from C lectotype)!). Trelease (1924) in pl. 227 shows two different specimens. In the caption to pl. 227 on p. 223 he states “The type (Mexico, Liebmann, 144-5 = 3557).” The lower image in pl. 227 is sheet 144 which we are designating as the lectotype, and the upper image in pl. 227 is sheet 145, an isolectotype.

Quercus campanariensis Trel., Mem. Natl.Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 126, pl. 228 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Michoacán: G. Arsène 6004 (Holotype: US 00089469!). The specimens of Arsène 6004 at BR, ILL, MO, and US collected on 13 Jul 1911 are Q. laeta View in CoL so they are not isotypes of Q. campanariensis View in CoL .

Distribution: Mexico (Chiapas, Chihuahua, Colima, Durango, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, México, Michoacán,

Morelos, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Puebla, Sinaloa, Sonora, Veracruz, Zacatecas).

Quercus sebifera Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 93, pl. 149a (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Chiapas: O. F. Cook 79 (Holotype: US 00089638!; isotypes: MO!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!, VT!) .

Quercus ceripes Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 93, pl. 150b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Puebla: H. Schenk 239 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): ILL00007460 View Materials ! (fragment)).

Quercus schenckiana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 93, pl. 150a (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Puebla: H. Schenk 238 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): ILL00007590 View Materials !) .

Quercus sebifera f. comitanensis Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 93, pl. 149b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Chiapas: O. F. Cook 78 (Holotype: US 00089639!) .

Quercus trinidadensis C.H.Mull., Amer. Midl. Naturalist View in CoL 27(2): 481 (1942). Type:— MEXICO, Nuevo León: C. H. Muller 2803 (Holotype: US 00089671!; isotypes: F!, GH!, LL (image)!, MICH!, MO!, NY!, UC!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!) .

Distribution: Mexico (Chiapas, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Hidalgo, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro,

San Luis Potosí, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Veracruz).

Quercus segoviensis Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 186 (1854) View in CoL . Type :— NICARAGUA, Segovia: A. S. Oersted 3559 (Lectotype: C 10012528! designated by Trelease (1924, 217, pl. 54a); isolectotypes: CAS!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Quercus achoteana Trel., Publ. Field Mus. Nat. Hist., Bot. Ser. View in CoL 17(4): 356 (1938). Type:— HONDURAS, Comayagua: T. G. Yuncker et al. 6136 (Holotype: ILL00007478 View Materials !; isotypes: F!, G!, GH!, K!, MICH!, MO!, NY!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!) .

Quercus achoteana var. sublanosa Trel., Publ. Field Mus. Nat. Hist., Bot. Ser. View in CoL 17(4): 356 (1938). Type:— HONDURAS, Comayagua: T. G. Yuncker et al. 5961 (Holotype: ILL00007477 View Materials !; isotypes: F!, G!, GH!, K!, MICH!, MO!, NY!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!, WIS!).

Quercus arachnoidea Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 59, pl. 55 (1924). Type :— EL SALVADOR: G. Niederlein s. n. (9 Jan 1898) (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 55)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype.

Quercus matagalpana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 58, pl. 54b (1924). Type:— NICARAGUA, Matagalpa: E. Rothschuh 611 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 54b)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype.

Quercus peduncularis Neé var. sublanosa (Trel.) C.H.Mull., U.S.D.A. Bur. Pl. Industr. Misc. Publ. 477: 34. (1942).

Quercus reticulata Bonpl. var. segoviensis (Liebm.) Wenz., Jahrb. K View in CoL ̂nigl. Bot. Gart. Berlin 3: 195 (1884).

Distribution: Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico (Chiapas, Oaxaca), Nicaragua. The occurrence of Q.

segoviensis in Michoacán reported by Villaseñor (2016) is probably incorrect.

Quercus sideroxyla Bonpl., Pl. Aequinoct. 2: 39, pl. 85 (1809). Type:— MEXICO, Guanajuato: A. Bonpland 4219 (p.p.) (Holotype: P00129702!; isotypes: P!, UCSB (fragment)!). Three sheets at P of Bonpland 4219 from Villapando are Q. sideroxyla , the holotype and two isotypes. Collections with the same number but from Santa Rosa are Q. tridens and are not types.

Quercus incarnata Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 126, pl. 230a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Chihuahua: R. Endlich 782b (p.p.) (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 230a)!). No isotypes exist of this species or any of the forms described by Trelease, and the other Endlich paratypes of the species at B were also destroyed. The two Arsène paratypes of Q. incarnata are other species (Arsène 5807 = Q. scytophylla and Arsène 6036 = Q. castanea ) so they cannot be used as possible lectotypes.

Quercus incarnata f. ampla Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 127, pl. 229b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Chihuahua: R. Endlich 782b (p.p.) (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 229b)!). One must assume that Trelease’s (1924) pl. 229b is of a branch from a different plant than the branch shown as pl. 230a which is of the holotype of the species.

Quercus incarnata f. grosse-serrata Trel., Mem.Natl.Acad.Sci. 20:127,pl. 231a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Chihuahua: R. Endlich 782d (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 231a)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype .

Quercus incarnata f. longa Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 127, pl. 230b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Chihuahua: R. Endlich 782a (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 230b)!). Trelease (1924, p. 127) cites Endlich 728a as the type, but on p. 223 in the caption to pl. 230b he cites Endlich 782a as the type. It is likely that the first citation is a typographic error, but in any event the collection at B was destroyed. Because no extant original material exists, we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype.

Quercus omissa A.DC., Prodr. 16(2.1): 28 (1864). Type:— MEXICO, Sinaloa: B. Seemann 1969 (Lectotype: K000512899 ! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 223, pl. 231b); isolectotypes: BM!, C (as s.n.), G!, GH!, UCSB (fragment from K lectotype)!, UCSB (fragment as s.n. from C)!). A. de Candolle (1864, p. 28) cites the type as being at both C and K.

Distribution: Mexico (Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Jalisco, México,

Michoacán, Morelos, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas,

Veracruz, Zacatecas). The occurrence of Q. sideroxyla in Morelos and Oaxaca reported by Villaseñor (2016) needs to be confirmed.

Quercus sinuata Walter, Fl. Carol. 235 (1788). Type:— U.S.A., Illinois: D. B. Ward 10586 (Neotype: FLAS218678 View Materials (image)! designated by Ward (2007, p. 180); isoneotypes: FLAS (image)!, GA, GH (image)!, NY (image)!, USCH (image)!).

Quercus breviloba (Torr.) Sarg., Gard. & Forest View in CoL 8: 93 (1895).

Quercus durandii Buckley, Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia View in CoL 12: 445 (1860[1861]). Type :— U.S.A., Alabama: C. H . Muller 36898 (Neotype: NA, designated by Dorr & Nixon (1985, p. 218); isoneotype: BH) .

Quercus obtusifolia D. Don var. breviloba Torr., Rep. U.S. Mex. Bound., Bot. View in CoL 2(1): 206 (1859). Type:— U.S.A., Texas: C. C. Parry et al. 1377 (Lectotype (designated here): NY00253713 !; isolectotypes: GH!, NY!). There are two syntypes at NY. The sheet with handwritten label information that is consistent with the protologue is chosen as the lectotype.

Quercus sinuata subsp. breviloba (Torr.) A.E.Murray, Kalmia View in CoL 13: 27 (1983).

Quercus sinuata var. breviloba (Torr.) C.H.Mull., J. Arnold Arbor. View in CoL 25(4): 439 (1944).

Distribution: Mexico (Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Veracruz), U.S.A. (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia,

Quercus chiapasensis Trel., Proc. Amer. Philos. Soc. View in CoL 54: 9, pl. 2 (1915). Type:— MEXICO, Chiapas: C. A. Purpus 6999 (Lectotype: ILL00007531 View Materials ! and ILL00010196 View Materials ! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 228, pl. 376); isolectotypes: BM!, F!, GH!, ILL!, MO!, NY!, UC!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!, VT!). The lectotype is mounted on two sheets, one with just leaves and the other with just acorns and cups. The sheet with leaves has the label from the collector.

Quercus chiapasensis f. cuneifolia Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 186 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Chiapas: E. Reeves 3 (Holotype: ILL00007530 View Materials ! and ILL00010195 View Materials !). The holotype is mounted on two sheets, one with just leaves and the other with just acorns and cups. Reeves 6 (Holotype: ILL00007557 View Materials ! and ILL00010198 View Materials !). The holotype is mounted on two sheets, one with just leaves and the other with just acorns and cups. The sheet with acorns and cups has the label from the collector.

Quercus chiapasensis f. longipes Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 186 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Chiapas: E. Reeves 1 (Holotype: ILL00007563 View Materials ! and ILL00010203 View Materials !). The holotype is mounted on two sheets, one with just leaves and the other with just acorns and cups. The sheet with acorns and cups has the label from the collector.

Quercus chiapasensis f. petiolata Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 186 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Chiapas: E. Reeves 8 (Holotype: ILL00007562 View Materials ! and ILL00010202 View Materials !). The holotype is mounted on two sheets, one with just leaves and the other with just acorns and cups. Yuncker et al. 6116 (Holotype: ILL00007555 View Materials !; isotypes: F!, G!, GH!, K!, MO!, NY!, UCSB (fragment)!, WIS!). The placement of this species needs additional study. It might be synonymous with Q. xalapensis View in CoL .

Distribution: El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico (Chiapas, Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Tamaulipas, Veracruz). The occurrence of Q. skinneri in Hidalgo reported by Villaseñor (2016) needs to be confirmed.
