Type material. Northeastern Pacific Ocean. Baja California, México. Holotype ( USNM 17387 ), R.V. Albatross, Sta. 4574 (30º35' N, 117º23' W), off Cabo Colnett, 3294 m, 8 Oct. 1904, J. P. Moore, id. as Stylarioides papillata . GoogleMaps

Description. Holotype (USNM 17387) complete, broken in two parts ( Fig. 17A View FIGURE 17 ), slightly dehydrated, with an

anteroventral dissection cut; body cylindrical, slightly tapered posteriorly; 29 (11+18) mm long, 2 mm wide, cephalic cage 12 mm long, 65 (21+44) chaetigers. Body papillae with fine sediment particles adhered basally and medially, leaving tips bare, giving a fusiform outline ( Fig. 17B, C View FIGURE 17 ). Papillae arranged in 4–5 irregular transverse bands per segment.

Cephalic hood not exposed. Anterior end not further dissected to avoid additional damage. Palps large, about 1.5x longer than branchiae. Other features not observed.

Cephalic cage chaetae about? as long as body length, 6x longer than body width ( Fig. 17A View FIGURE 17 ). Chaetigers 1–3 forming cephalic cage but chaetiger 3 with shorter chaetae; chaetae arranged in short series, displaced dorsally. About 10 notochaetae and 8 neurochaetae in chaetiger 1, 8 noto- and 6 neurochaetae in chaetiger 2, and 6 noto- and 4 neurochaetae in chaetiger 3.

Anterior dorsal margin of first chaetiger with a bilobed, low projection.. Chaetigers 1–3 of about the same length. Chaetal transititon from cephalic cage to body chaetae abrupt; anchylosed, falcate blunt lamispines start from chaetiger 4. Gonopodial lobes not seen.

Parapodia poorly developed, chaetae emerge from body wall. Parapodia lateral; medial neuropodia ventrolateral. Notopodial lobes low, without prechaetal papillae, with a long, postchaetal and one inferior, shorter papillae. Neuropodial lobes lower with one anterior, two posterior, and an inferior papillae.

Medial notochaetae arranged in a È-pattern, transverse to body axis, directed dorsally. All notochaetae multiarticulated capillaries with articles short basally, medium-sized medially, long distally ( Fig. 17D View FIGURE 17 ). About eight notochaetae per fascicle, slightly longer than body width, longer in posterior chaetigers. Neurochaetae multiarticulated capillaries in chaetigers 1–3; falcate anchylosed lamispines from chaetiger 4, subidstally widened, arranged in transverse series, four per fascicle throughout the body ( Fig. 17E View FIGURE 17 ).

Posterior end with long chaetae, notochaetae about as long as body width; pygidium conical, truncate, anus open, terminal; without cirri ( Fig. 17F View FIGURE 17 ).

Remarks. Lamispina carrerai n. sp. belongs in the group of species with body papillae stiff, and with lamispines subdistally widened, falcate,which also includes L. gymnopapillata ( Hartmann-Schröder, 1965) n. comb., and L. horsti ( Haswell, 1892) n. comb. However, L. carrerai is unique because its cephalic cage is markedly longer than in the other species, being 6x longer than body width, whereas in the two other species it is about 2–3x longer than body width. Moore (1923) indicated he had two specimens, but only one was available.

Etymology. This species is named after Luis F. Carrera-Parra, dear friend and colleague, in recognition of his many publications on polychaete taxonomy, especially on euniceans, and because of his long-standing support towards my research activities. The epithet is a noun in the genitive case.

Type locality. Off Cabo Colnett , Baja California, living in sediments at 3294 m depth .

Distribution. Only known from the type locality.
