Material examined

Type, 1 deutonymph female, USA, New York, Cayuga Co., beside Rt. 20, 1 mile east of Auburn mossy swale and cat­tail swamp, 21 April 1961, by H. Habeeb (HH610006); cotypes, 6 adult females, same data as type slide.

Diagnosis

Adult female. Dorsal idiosomal shields strongly reticulated. Dorsal idiosomal setae clavate with hyaline sheaths; ratios vi: vi–vi = 1.4 (1.4–1.7), ve: ve–sci = 1.3 (1.1–1.3), sci: sce = 0.8 (0.7–0.9), c1: c1–c1 = 0.4 (0.4–0.5), e1: e1–e1 = 0.4, c1–c1: d1–d1: e1–e1: f1–f1 = 1.2 (1.1–1.3): 1.6 (1.3–1.7): 1.4 (1.2–1.5): 1.0; without callosities between idiosomal shield and humeral shield. Dorsalmost setae on femora I 0.7 (0.6–0.7) times as long as h1; tarsi IV without solenidion.

Deutonymph female. Dorsal idiosomal shields reticulated. Dorsal idiosomal setae clavate (except h2) with hyaline sheaths. Hysterosomal shield transversally separated. Ratios vi: vi–vi = 1.4, ve: ve–sci = 1.4, sci: sce = 0.7, c1: c1–c1 = 0.6, e1: e1–e1 = 0.5, c1–c1: d1–d1: e1–e1: f1–f1 = 1.1: 1.6: 1.4: 1.0. Dorsalmost setae on femora I 0.7 times lengths of h1. Trochanters IV without setae and solenidion on tarsi IV absent.

Gnathosoma . Finely punctate. Chelicerae about twice as long as movable digits (108 (106–111): 35 (35–40)). Palp 85 (75–88). Subcapitular setae m about as long as n, m = 20 (20–23), n = 20 (18–20); m–m less than distance n–n; m–m = 30 (28–30), n–n = 38 (36– 38), m–n = 15 (15–18).

Idiosoma. Nearly round, 375 (363–393) long, 283 (273–285) wide. Dorsal idiosomal shields highly reticulated. Dorsal idiosomal setae clavate with hyaline sheaths; ratios vi: vi–vi = 1.4 (1.4–1.7), ve: ve–sci = 1.3 (1.1–1.3), sci: sce = 0.8 (0.7–0.9), c1: c1–c1 = 0.4 (0.4–0.5), e1: e1–e1 = 0.4, c1–c1: d1–d1: e1–e1: f1–f1 = 1.2 (1.1–1.3): 1.6 (1.3–1.7): 1.4 (1.2– 1.5): 1.0; eyes 14 (13–14) in diameter; setal lengths: vi 50 (47–50), ve 58 (50–58), sci 38 (35–38), sce 48 (43–50), c1 45 (40–46), d 1 45 (40–45), d 2 40 (39–41), e1 50 (45–50), e 2 50 (43–50), f1 58 (50–58); distances: vi– vi 35 (28–35), vi–ve 73 (64–73), ve–sci 45 (45–50), sci–sce 43 (43–50), c1–c1 103 (93–103), c1–d1 98 (91–98), d1–d1 138 (121–138), d1–d2 73 (66–75), d1– e 1 88 (85–88), e1–e1 115 (108–118), e1– e 2 55 (50–63), e1–f1 53 (43–53), f1–f1 85 (78–90); humeral setae c 2 40 (38–40), slightly longer than c1. Suranal setae h1: h2 = 1.4 (1.1–1.5), h1 41 (41–47), h2 30 (30–38). Endopodal shields I–II separated along midline, ventral setae 1a slightly longer than other two pairs; endopodal shields III–IV separated along midline, 3a situated between coxae III, 1a 25 (23–25), 3a 23 (23–25) and 4a 21 (20– 23). Aggenital shield and genitoanal valves confluent, with 3 pairs of subequal setae, ag1 20 (18–20), ag2 20 (18–20), ag3 20 (20–25); pseudanal setae ps1 thicker than other two pairs, ps 3 19 (19–23), ps 2 15 (15–18), ps1 25 (24–25).

Legs. Length: leg I 210 (210–218), leg II 178 (173–188), leg III 185 (176–188), leg IV 209 (196–215). Dorsalmost setae on femora I (dFI) clavate with hyaline sheaths, 28 (27– 28) long, 0.7 (0.6–0.7) times length of h1. Dorsalmost setae on genua I (dGI) as dFI, 35 (34–36) long; on genua I slender and small, less than 1/3 length of dGI, 10 (8–9), on genua II peg­like, pointed, 8 (6–8). Counts of setae and solenidia on legs I–IV: coxae 2 + 1 elcp, 2, 2, 2; trochanters 1, 1, 2, 1; femora 6, 5, 3, 2; genua 3 + 1, 3 + 1, 1, 1; tibiae 5 + 1 + 1 p, 5 + 1 p, 5 + 1 p, 5 + 1 p; tarsi 13 + 1, 9 + 1,,. Lengths of solenidia: I 18 (17–18), II 15 (14–15), III 8 (6–8).

Gnathosoma . Finely punctate. Chelicerae about twice as long as movable digits (88: 30). Palp 68. Subcapitular setae m slightly longer than n, m = 18, n = 15); m–m less than distance of n–n; m–m = 25, n–n = 33, m–n = 15.

Idiosoma. Nearly round, 288 long, 238 wide. Dorsal idiosomal shields finely punctate; hysterosomal shield transversally separated. Dorsal idiosomal setae clavate (except h2) with hyaline sheaths; ratios vi: vi–vi = 1.4, ve: ve–sci = 1.4, sci: sce = 0.7, c1: c1–c1 = 0.6, e1: e1–e1 = 0.5, c1–c1: d1–d1: e1–e1: f1–f1 = 1.1: 1.6: 1.4: 1.0; eyes 9 in diameter; setal lengths: vi 40, ve 45, sci 28, sce 40, c1 38, d 1 35, d 2 35, e1 40, e 2 41, f1 45; distances: vi– vi 28, vi–ve 53, ve–sci 33, sci–sce 40, c1–c1 65, c1–d1 75, d1–d1 98, d1–d2 55, d1– e 1 58, e1– e 1 83, e1– e 2 40, e1–f1 38, f1–f1 60; humeral setae c 2 29, slightly shorter than c1. Suranal setae h1: h2 = 1.3, h1 35, h2 28. Ventral setae 1a slightly longer than other two pairs, 3a situated between coxae III, 1a 18, 3a 17 and 4a 15. Endopodal shields III–IV separated along midline; Aggenital shield and genitoanal valves confluent, with 3 pairs of subequal setae, ag1 15, ag2 15, ag3 15; pseudanal setae ps1 thicker than other two pairs, ps 3 14), ps 2 11, ps1 16.

Legs. Length: leg I 163, leg II 135, leg III 138, leg IV 165. Dorsalmost setae on femora I (dFI) clavate (except h2) with hyaline sheaths, 23 long, 0.7 times length of h1. Dorsalmost setae on genua I (dGI) as dFI, 25 long; on genua I obviously shorter than dGI, 8, on genua II peg­like, 5. Counts of setae and solenidia on legs I–IV: coxae 2 + 1 elcp, 2, 2, 2; trochanters 1, 1, 2, 0; femora 6, 5, 3, 2; genua 3 + 1, 3 + 1, 1, 1; tibiae 5 + 1 + 1 p, 5 + 1 p, 5 + 1 p, 5 + 1 p; tarsi 13 + 1, 9 + 1,,. Lengths of solenidia: I 13, II 10, III 4.

Remarks

Habeeb (1961) described Ledermuelleriopsis taylori and Ledermuelleria reticulatella at the same time. After careful examination of the type materials we found that Ledermuelleriopsis taylori is a deutonymph of Ledermuelleria reticulatella Habeeb. Since both names were simultaneously published, according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature ( ICZN 1999), “if two or more names,…are published on the same date in the same or different works, the precedence of the names or acts is fixed by the First Reviser…”. According to recommendation 24A, we give precedence to reticulatella because it was based on adult specimens.
