Revised description. Medium sized, slender fusiform shell of up to 13 teleoconch whorls; apical angle ~20– 22°. Protoconch broad conical of 2.5 convex whorls. First teleoconch whorl with mid-whorl angulation and weak subsutural band. Axial ribs form prominent beads on shoulder cord. Later whorls with beaded subsutural band, resulting in two beaded spiral cords. Indistinct axial ribs may form third row of weak beads just above abapical suture. Later teleoconch whorls flat sided. Sculpture of dense orthocline axial ribs separated by narrower interspaces. Axial ribs beaded on moderately prominent subsutural band, with second spiral row of beads on shoulder cord. Spire profile weakly gradate. Subsutural band and beads weaken on later whorls grading into weak axial ribs separated by wider interspaces.Shoulder cord forming periphery. On last whorl axial ribs weaken slightly, indistinct on the last half whorl in some specimens. Faint spiral threads in interspaces on some specimens. Last whorl high, ~37–43% of total height; slowly contracting into base. Fasciole weak with some more prominent growth increments. Aperture very narrow, elongate. Anal canal indistinct, weakly incised. Columella slightly twisted, excavated in adapical half. No columellar fold. Columellar callus forming broad rim, usually not distinctly delimited from base. Outer lip thin. Siphonal canal narrow, long, slightly twisted and deflected to the left.

Paratethyan synonyms. Specimens assigned herein to this species were described by Hörnes (1852) as Terebra fusiformis although he clearly stated that his specimens were identical to ‘ Fusus terebrinus Bellardi & Michelotti’. Hörnes (1852) even included specimens from Tortona in his description, but nevertheless introduced a new name for this species. Hörnes (1852) seems to have suppressed the older name because the curator Paul Maria Partsch (1791–1856) had labelled the Viennese specimens already in the early 1840ies as a new species in the NHMWcollection. However, Bellardi & Michelotti’s name clearly has priority.

Terebra bigranulata Hoernes & Auinger, 1880 is based on a juvenile specimen of Fusoterebra terebrina with prominent beads and at that stage of growth nearly absent axial ribs. Its close relation with Fusoterebra terebrina was already recognized by Sacco (1891a) and Davoli (1977).

Discussion. Fusoterebra terebrina is variable concerning its sculpture and especially the subsutural beads and the shoulder beads may be very prominent or almost subobsolete at variable stages of growth. In most Paratethyan specimens, delicate axial ribs are the predominant sculpture on late teleoconch whorls. Early whorls are reminiscent of some species of Duplicaria Dall, 1908 , such as Duplicaria herberti Malcolm, Terryn & Fedosov in Fedosov et al., 2020 and D. mozambiquensis Bratcher & Cernohorsky, 1982 , but the fusiform last whorl of F. terebrina excludes a closer relation (see Fedosov et al. 2020: figs 11A–D).

Paleoenvironment. The frequent occurrence in the middle Badenian Baden Formation in the Vienna Basin suggests middle to outer neritic water depths ( Kranner et al. 2021), which is in line with the preferred habitat of living pellifronine species.

Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): North Alpine-Carpathian Foreland Basin: Rudice, Židlochovice ( Czech Republic) ( Hoernes & Auinger 1880); Vienna Basin: Baden, Möllersdorf ( Austria) ( Hoernes & Auinger 1880); Eisenstadt-Sopron Basin: Forchtenau ( Austria) ( Hoernes & Auinger 1880), Sopron ( Hungary) ( Strausz 1966); Bükk Mountains: Borsodbóta, Bóta ( Hungary) ( Csepreghy-Meznerics 1972); Făget Basin: CoŞteiu de Sus, Lăpugiu des Sus ( Romania) ( Hoernes & Auinger 1880).

Proto-Mediterranean Sea. Langhian (Middle Miocene): Colli Torinesi: Monte Cappuccini ( Italy) ( Zunino & Pavia 2009). Tortonian (Late Miocene): Po Basin: S. Agata, Giusulana, Montegibbio, Rio Mazzapiedi-Castellania, Stazzano ( Italy) ( Sacco 1891a; Robba 1968; Davoli 1977).
