Notes

Species complex. At least 6 different putative cryptic species - of which two occur in the Atlantic, four in the Arctic and three in the Pacific - were found by Carr et al. (2011). Nygren et al. (2010b) showed that different colour morphs in Scandinavia all belong to the same species. Whether the Mediterranean specimens belong to the same species as those from northern Europe is currently unknown.
