Diagnosis

Lysilinga aurantiaca is taxonomically associated with L. occipitalis in lacking setae on the katepisternum and in having the abdomen yellowish orange or at least tergites 2–4 orange. Lysilinga aurantiaca differs from L. occipitalis in having the macrosetae on the occiput, thorax and coxae dark reddish brown and the female frons lacking a large dark brown area dorsolaterally.

Redescription of male

Variation (n=10).

Body length 5.8–7.8, 6.6 mm.

Head. Ommatidia smaller ventrally and laterally. Frons pruinescence silver, dark brown to black dorsally; setae absent. Antenna dark brown, pedicel and basal half of first flagellomere orange brown; scape with setae dark reddish brown, short. Parafacial pruinescence silver. Maxillary palpus yellow; setae white. Genal setae white. Occipital setae white ventrally, sparse dorsally. Postocular macrosetae dark reddish brown.

Thorax. Macrosetae dark reddish brown, 3 np, 1–2 sa, 1 pa, 0 dc, 1–2 sc. Mesonotum dark brown, pruinescence brownish gray; setae black, short intermixed with gold, slightly iridescent, lanceolate, appressed setae. Pleuron pruinescence silver; setae white on propleuron, anepisternum, laterotergite, and metanepisternum, appressed, gold, lanceolate on scutellum, absent on katepisternum. Wing. Membrane pale gray, veins and crossveins with pale brown margin, apical cells diffuse pale brown; veins brown; pterostigma brown; cell m 3 open. Halter yellow to yellowish brown. Legs. Coxal macrosetae dark reddish brown. Femora black, pruinescence white; ventral setae absent; av 0–3:0:0–4, pv 0:0:1–3. Tibiae dark brown. Tarsomeres dark brown.

Abdomen. Tergite 1 dark brown, lateral margins orange brown; tergites 2–4 orange, glossy, tergites 5–7 black; dorsal setae dark brown, appressed on tergites 1–4, black on tergites 5–7, posterior margin with white, appressed setae on tergites 1–6. Terminalia (ME I 099933). Tergite 8 and epandrium ( Fig. 361), setae dark brown. Hypoproct ( Fig. 361) quadrate, posterior margin slightly emarginate, ending distal to apex of cercus. Gonocoxite ventral view (Fig. 371) rectangular, medial margin straight with rounded posteromedial lobe, then becoming emarginate before tapering apically to attenuate projection, setae black, moderately thick; dorsal view ( Fig. 381) gonocoxal bridge small; lateral view (Fig. 391) rectangular, tapering apically to broad point; ventral lobe (Fig. 371) with ventral spines. Gonostylus ( Fig. 401) lacking basodorsal lobe; ventral margin broadly rounded, setae dark yellow; fine short spines laterally. Aedeagus with dorsal apodeme (Fig. 411) quadrate, posterolateral margin expanded; ventral apodeme ( Fig. 421) tapered anteriorly to anterior margin of dorsal apodeme; distiphallus dorsal view (Fig. 411) tapered apically to fine point with apicomedial carina, lateral view (Fig. 431) apical half recurved apically, subapical hood pointed; ejaculatory apodeme (Fig. 411), anterior half slightly expanded laterally, not extending beyond anterior margin of dorsal apodeme, anterior margin truncate, in cross­section flattened dorsoventrally.

Female

Similar to male except for following.

Variation (n=10).

Body length 6.3–8.4, 7.0 mm.

Head. Frons reddish brown, pruinescence brownish gray, silver ventrally; setae dark brown, short. Antenna dark brown, pruinescence on scape and pedicel gray, basal half of first flagellum orange brown.

Thorax. Macrosetae 3 np, 1–2 sa, 1 pa, 0 dc, 1–2 sc. Mesonotum dark brown, pruinescence brownish gray; setae black, short intermixed with pale gold, lanceolate, appressed setae which have a slight greenish iridescent appearance, anepisternum with pale gold setae across dorsal margin. Legs. Coxal macrosetae dark reddish brown. Femora dark reddish brown; av 1–2:0:1–4, pv 0:0:0–4.

Abdomen. Tergite 1 dark brown, posterior margin orange brown; tergites 2–4 orange, glossy; tergite 5 dark reddish brown, pruinescence on posterior half gray; tergites 6–8 dark reddish brown, glossy; dorsal setae dark brown, appressed with white, appressed setae on posterior margin of tergite 1. Terminalia (MEI 073920). Furca ( Fig. 441) quadrate, anterior margin thick; length 0.44 mm, width 0.36 mm; posteromedial lobe large, cone­shaped, convex dorsally; anterolateral and anteromedial projection absent. Common duct ( Fig. 441) longer than furca.

Distribution

Lysilinga aurantiaca ranges from Baja California Norte north to California, east to western Texas and Utah ( Fig. 448).

Habitats and phenology

Adults of Lysilinga aurantiaca have been handnetted, occasionally on plants ( Acacia greggii Gray , Chilopsis linearis (Cav.) Sweet ); collected in light traps (ultraviolet or mercury vapor); or in Malaise traps in dry washes (near springs or wet areas), in chaparral, or in coastal sage scrub. Specimens have been collected in February from April to September and November.
