(Figs. 228, 242, 256, 270, 284, 298, 312, 326, 339, 351, 360)

obscura Coquillett (1893:229   orig. desc.), Kröber (1911:501 fem. key, 517 add. desc.; 1913:33

dist.; 1914:41 fem. key, 49 add. desc.; 1928a:6 dist., 12 fem. key) ( Psilocephala   ). Type locality

Jamaica, Kingston. Holotype female in MCZ. New Combination. squamosa Hardy (1943:24   orig. desc., 25 Figs. 1a ant., 1b male genit.) ( Psilocephala   ). Type locality

United States, Florida, Key West. Holotype male in SEMC. New synonym.

The male holotype of Psilocephala squamosa Hardy   was compared with males of Elcaribe obscurus (Coquillett)   and found to be conspecific based on the lack of an anterodorsal patch of dark, short setae on the gena; lacking anteroventral and posteroventral macrosetae on the midfemur; in having elongate, dark macrosetae along the ventromedial margin of the gonocoxite; in lacking a posteromedial projection ventrally on the gonocoxite; in having the gonocoxite in ventral view attenuate; the posterior margin of the hypoproct moderately emarginate; and the ejaculatory apodeme cylindrical anteriorly and in crosssection.

Diagnosis

Elcaribe obscurus   is taxonomically associated with E. laticornis   in lacking an anterodorsal patch of dark, short setae on the gena; in lacking anteroventral and posteroventral macrosetae on the midfemur; in having elongate, dark macrosetae along the ventromedial margin of the gonocoxite ( Fig. 242); and in lacking a posteromedial projection ( Fig. 242) ventrally on the gonocoxite. Elcaribe obscurus   differs from E. laticornis   in having the gonocoxite in ventral view ( Fig. 242) attenuate with the medial macrosetae thin; the posterior margin of the hypoproct (Fig. 228) moderately emarginate; and the ejaculatory apodeme ( Fig. 298) cylindrical anteriorly and circular in crosssection.

Habitats and phenology

Elcaribe obscurus   has been handnetted in dry scrub and on a variety of plants ( Borrichia frutoscens   (L.) DC., Citrus aurantifolia (Christm.) Swingle   , Ficus aurea Nutt.   , Flaveria linearis Lag.   , Ipomoea spp.   leaves, Lippia nodiflora   (L.)
