Notes
Following molecular phylogenetic analysis of Agathidinae ( Sharkey et al. 2006), the genus Bassus s.l. was recognised as being a polyphyletic assemblage. Species are now being described in or reassigned to Lytopylus , Thermophilus and the non-British Camptothlipsis ( Sharkey et al. 2009, Stevens et al. 2010, Stevens et al. 2011, Achterberg and Long 2010, Achterberg 2011) but very few European species have been formally transferred. The species on the British list have therefore been reassigned here on the bases of recent generic keys (e.g. Sharkey et al. 2009) in anticipation of future taxonomy. Whereas Bassus s. s. is now restricted to a small group of species (only one in Britain), Therophilus remains large and probably para- or polyphyletic. Distribution and synonymic data for Bassus , Lytopylus and Therophilus from Nixon (1986) and Simbolotti and Achterberg (1992).
