Glycobius speciosus (Say, 1828) View in CoL View at ENA ; Clytini “sugar maple borer” [new state record]
Distribution: NB to VA to KY to MI, with somewhat disjunct photo record from central AL (iNat). Kentucky specimens were taken in the Western Allegheny Plateau and Southwestern Appalachians ecoregions (Map 064).
Kentucky counties: Laurel (1), Madison (2)
Years: 2011 (1), 2013 (1), 2016 (1)
Months: June (1), July (1), August (1)
Collections (3 records, 3 specimens): EGCCRC (1), JMLC (1), PDBC (1)
Collection methods: Malaise trap (1); sugar trap (1); panel trap baited with C6 & α-pinene (1)
Larval host plants: Apparently restricted to living maples as larval hosts ( Acer rubrum , A. saccharinum , A. saccharum ; Linsley & Chemsak 1997) where larval feeding usually does not kill the host, but leaves a distinctive scar in the lower 6 m of trunk ( Talerico 1962)
Comments: This species is thought to have been extirpated from much of the midwestern portion of its range due to forest fragmentation ( Holland 2009). However, the three Kentucky specimens were all collected within the last decade or so.
