Sphenostethus taslei (Buquet, 1841) View in CoL ; Solenopterini
Distribution: MD to FL to eastern TX to MO. Kentucky specimens are from the Appalachian foothills east of Berea and from just WSW of Cincinnati, OH ( Interior Plateau and Western Allegheny Plateau; Map 172).
Kentucky counties: Boone (1), Jackson (1), Madison (3)
Years: 1972 (1), 2013 (1), 2017 (1), 2018 (1), 2019 (1)
Months: July (2), August (3)
Collections (5 records, 5 specimens): EGCCRC (2), iNat (2), INHS (1)
Collection methods: Sugar trap (1) crawling on dead wood on the ground (1)
Larval host plants: Castanea dentata , Cercis canadensis , Fagus ferrugineus , Quercus alba and Sesbania drummondii ( Monné & Nearns 2022a)
Chemical lures: Uncertain (see below)
Comments: This typically diurnal species has also been found at lights. In testing possible lures, Miller et al. (2017) collected 47 specimens in 10-unit multiple funnel traps in northern GA—they came to baited and unbaited traps at the same rate, so perhaps Lindgren funnels alone are effective for collecting this rarely collected species.
