Type:— COLOMBIA. Valle/Chocó: El Cairo, corregimiento Boquerón, vereda Las Amarillas, Serranía de Los Paraguas , ca. 21‒25 km beyond El Cairo, ca. 4°45´N, 76°20´W, 1850‒2000 m, 25 Apr 1989 (fl, fr), J. L. Luteyn & J. Giraldo 12663 (holotype: CUVC! [16770]; isotypes: NY! [ NY01185845 , 01185846 ]). Figs. 23 View FIGURE 23 , 24F–J View FIGURE 24 GoogleMaps .

Terrestrial or epiphytic herbs up to 60 cm tall. Stem glabrous. Petiole 2–9 mm long, glabrous; blade narrowly elliptic to lanceolate, (4.0–) 5.5–13.0 × 1.0– 2.2 cm, glabrous above and beneath, base cuneate, slightly asymmetric, apex acuminate, acumen up to 2 cm, margin serrate, with 12 to 20 intramarginal (rarely marginal) hydathodes per side, secondary veins 12 to 20 per side, higher order venation markedly reticulate, intramarginal vein present. Peduncle 6–8 cm long, glabrous, ebracteolate. Hypanthium subglobose, 8–10 × 6–8 mm, glabrous. Calyx lobes broadly ovate, 1–2 × 2–3 mm, ascending, basally spaced by sinuses up to 1 mm wide, glabrous, margin entire, apex obtuse. Corolla uniformly green, glabrous; tube 1.5–2.0 cm long, 6–7 mm diameter at its proximal and mid-level, inflated distally; lobes straight (not falcate), narrowly ovate, apex acute to shortly acuminate, dorsal lobes 24–35 × 2–5 mm, lateral lobes 20–23 × 2–5 mm, ventral lobe 18–22 × 2–5 mm. Synandrium 1.9‒2.6 cm long, exserted up to ca 5 mm; filament tube 1.5–2.0 cm long, glabrous; anther tube 4–6 mm long, strigose, apex evenly sparsely puberulous to glabrous, ventral anthers ebarbate. Berries oblate, 2.5–3.8 × 3.5–4.0 cm, inflated, glabrous, white.

Phenology: — Burmeistera salicifolia has been collected with flowers and fruits in April, August and December.

Distribution, ecology and conservation status: — Burmeistera salicifolia occurs only in two restricted locations of the Colombian Western Cordillera (Serranía de Los Paraguas and Cerro Torrá), in the limits between the departments of Chocó and Valle del Cauca. It occurs in understory of cloud sub-Andean forests at elevations between 1600 and 2200 m. Following the IUCN´s (2022) criteria [B1(EOO) and B2(AOO), conditions (a) and (b), and C2(a)(i)], this species qualifies as Critically Endangered.

Notes: — Burmeistera salicifolia is similar to B. xerampelina , from which it differs by the petiole glabrous; the leaf blade narrowly elliptic to lanceolate, with an intramarginal vein; the corolla with tube 1.5–2.0 cm long, dorsal lobes 24–35 mm long, lateral lobes 20–23 mm long, and ventral lobe 18–22 mm long; and the anther tube strigose, with ventral anthers ebarbate at preanthesis (versus the petiole glabrescent to sparsely puberulous; blade ovate, oblong or elliptic, lacking intramarginal vein; the corolla with tube tube 6–7 mm long, dorsal lobes 10–15 mm long, lateral lobes 7–14 mm long, and ventral lobe 8–14 mm long; and the anther tube glabrous, with ventral anthers barbate at preanthesis in B. xerampelina ). The flowers of Burmeistera salicifolia are similar to those of B. xerampelina , as both species have short (0.5‒2.0 mm long) calyx lobes, and corolla lobes forming an angle of 90° with respect to the tube.
