scientific name

Populus alba L.
status

Populus alba Linnaeus , Species Plantarum 2: 1034. 1753.

“Habitat in Europa temperatiori.” RCN: 7462.

Lectotype (Jonsell in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 78. 1993): Herb. Burser XXIII: 19 (UPS).

Generitype of Populus Linnaeus (vide Green, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 192. 1929).

Current name: Populus alba L. ( Salicaceae ).

Note: Siddiqi (in Jafri & El-Gadi, Fl. Libya 142: 10. 1987) indicated 1185.1 (LINN) as type, but this appears to be a Gerber collection from the River Don region, and therefore conflicts with the geographical part of Linnaeus’ protologue. For this reason, Jonsell designated a Burser collection as lectotype.
