Adult. Proboscis well developed. Antennae ciliate in both sexes. Forewing with at least two red, brown or gray transverse fascia, a basal spot, plus at least one apical spot. A tuft of modified scales (secondary sexual features) between discal part of cell and costa in the males. Vein M2 of hindwings obsolescent ( Karisch, 2013).
Male genitalia. Uncus moderately long, broad; saccular process usually tapered and curved to an acute apex; aedeagus short, broad, and vesica ornamented by scobinated zones or clumps of spines ( Holloway, 2001).
Female genitalia. Appendix bursae large; corpus bursae wrinkled. Signum scobinated and often one or two in number, when present ( Holloway, 2001).
Remarks. Recently, African species of this genus were classified as Cyana by Karisch (2013), who suggested that the genus be subdivide into 24 subgenera, but this proposal is not followed herein.
