Distribution: SE New Mexico east to S Texas ( USA), east from N Chihuahua to Tamaulipas ( Mexico).
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Synonymized with flavus by Wilson (1973), but Lee and Engstrom (1991) considered merriami a separate species based on biochemical genetics, as did Anderson (1972) using morphological criteria. Reviewed by Best and Skupski (1994 b, Mammalian Species No. 473).
