Superfamily CYPRIDOIDEA Baird, 1845 View in CoL

Family CYPRIDIDAE Baird, 1845 Subfamily CYPRIDINAE Baird, 1845 Tribe CYPRIDINI Baird, 1845

Diagnosis (modified after Martens 1990)

Large (1.5– 3 mm) and globular to semi-globular species; surface structure of valves smooth or weakly sculptured, rarely with large spines. Some species with ‘‘porenwarzen’’. Anterior selvages symmetrically (in both valves) or asymmetrically (in RV only) inwardly displaced. Hemipenis with ‘‘8’’-shaped loops in the inner spermiductus. Mx1-palp with terminal palp segment rectangular; third endite with two tooth bristles. T2 with penultimate segment divided or undivided. Caudal ramus slender, attachment without additional proximal structures ( Chlamydotheca s.l. has such additional proximal structures).

Fossil record

? Virgatocypris Malz and Moayedpour, 1973 (type species: V. virgata Malz and Moayedpour 1973 ).

Key to the extant genera of Cypridini

1. T2 with penultimate segment divided............. 2

– T2 with penultimate segment not divided............ 4

2. Seta d 1 on T2 ca 3× as long as seta d 2, RV with, LV without a selvage... 3

– Setae d 1 and d 2 on T2 subequal, both valves with anterior selvages inwardly displaced, T1 palp in female with three lateral setae (male unknown, only one species: G. trisetosa )............... Globocypris View in CoL

3. RV with anterior selvage considerably inwardly displaced, LV without selvage but with large anterior and posterior inner list, both parallel to valve margin..................... Ramotha View in CoL

– RV with anterior selvage submarginal, LV without large anterior inner list but with posterior inner list with aberrant shape (not parallel to valve margin)................... Mnementh View in CoL n. gen.

4. Both valves with prominent anterior selvage, the latter ventrally protruding (lip-like) in lateral view, no lateral ala, seta d 1 of T2 ca 3× as long as seta d 2 ...................... Cypris View in CoL

– Both valves with anterior selvage submarginal, most species with lateral alae; seta d 2 of T2 missing................ Pseudocypris View in CoL
