Canacids comprise 321 species, grouped into six subfamilies and 28 genera ( Munari & Mathis 2021). McAlpine (2007) included Tethinidae as a subfamily within the Canacidae . Fifteen species have been reported from Chile, included in the genera Nocticanace Malloch , Masoniella Vockeroth , Pelomyia Williston , and Tethina Haliday. Munari (2013) recently described a new species from the Coquimbo Region, Pelomyia avittata Munari.
