Mycetophilidae View in CoL View at ENA ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 14–19 )
The family Mycetophilidae comprises more than 4,000 extant species, grouped into six subfamilies and 150 genera ( Oliveira & Amorim 2021). Oliveira & Amorim (2014) provided an updated catalog of the types of many Neotropical Mycetophilidae , and Amorim & Oliveira (2013) made comments and acquired images of types of the Neotropical species at the Natural History Museum, London. There are records of 739 species divided among 35 genera for Chile, with representatives from all six subfamilies ( Oliveira & Amorim 2014). The largest mycetophilid genus in Chile is Mycetophila Meigen with 336 species, followed by Epicypta Winnertz (63 species), Tetragoneura Winnertz (49), Echinopodium Freeman (33) and Mycomya Rondani (30). Mycetophilids are largely humidity dependent; therefore, they are much more abundant in temperate rainforests than in other areas of Chile. Mycetophilidae are possibly the most species-rich family of flies in Chile, with a large number of undescribed species.
